My subway card expired with money in it. What do I do? Can I get my money back?

If it's within a year of the expiration date, any station agent can give you a new card with your unused balance. If it's between one and two years, you have to send it away to get a new card. If it's more than two years, then you're out of luck.

I THINK some machines can update it too -- but I may be confusing that for here in Boston.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?

Unfortunately, if it's past the expiration date, it will just tell you it's expired.

When i was in NYC a few weeks ago the machine exchanged it for me.

I had two cards recently expire at the same time. The machine wouldn't update it but a very grumpy old lady in the booth did.
I guess it depends on which machines you put your card into.
