Do anything by Arthur Miller, Tony Kushner, Thornton Wilder. Or maybe a french author? How about Camus, Sartre, Giraudoux...?
Edit: or do some German plays: Brecht, Schiller, Goethe...

"You Can't Take It With You" seems to be a favorite among High Schools. G Rated - lots of big parts for guys and gals.
"Feifers People" is also good.
"Twelfth Night"
Harvey is a pretty good play for a high school. it values small town morality and has no offensive humour at all.
Last year we did Ten Little Indians.
I was in a production of The Women. Granted it's an all female cast, and there are some tongue-in-cheek sexual references, but it's a fantastic ensemble piece. I loved it!
Kushner for high schools? No thanks....
All the classics are good bets. Almost everything by Wilder.
"You Can't Take it With You," "Our Town," etc.

*lol* Munky, take a chance, what's wrong with Kushner??
No need to stick to the tamest of the tame, is there?
It has nothing to do with being tame - I'm all for pushing the envelope.
But if they were to do something like ANGELS IN AMERICA at a high school, much of the integrity of the original material would inevitably be compromised. Significant cuts would have to be made.
For colleges, of course- yes.
For high schools? Come on. It's just not do-able.

Okay, you just convinced me
OUR TOWN is such a horribly rotten boring play.
Beautifully written, but boring.

Well, in a way you're right that Our Town is very much impressive by the way it's written.
What about one of the Del Shores plays?
RUMORS is great.
and what about Neil Labute?
Thanks for all the great suggestions, and keep going.
We have done several of the plays mentioned including Harvey, You Can't Take it With You, and others.
Keep suggesting.
We also did Rumors.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Any others, keep going.
Last year my high school did Arsenic and Old Lace.
This year we're doing Noises Off.
We did Arsenic, and Noises Off is great suggestion!
I don't find OUT TOWN boring at all. I find it fascinating. Good productions of it are never boring.
What about "Wait Until Dark" or "Pygmalion"?
We're doing The Shadow Box, this year.
I would not reccomend it for high schoolers.
even though we're doing it...
GAH hypocrites!
