Summer Reading...

just curious what has been in everyone's beach bag for Summer reading (or any good novel/book you have recently read)

One of my favorites in the past year was "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time." A great read and a great character!

I am embarrased to admit to having read "Trading Up" by Candace Bushnell...this year's Valley of the Dolls " -- pure trash, but oh so fun!

Not exactly light reading, but "Middlesex" by Jeffrey Eugenides. I recommend this to anyone with half a brain. Incredible.

"Around the World with Auntie Mame" by Patrick Dennis. Not as good as the original book, Auntie Mame, but still entertaining.

I'm also reading a collection of Ibsen's plays (my favorite is A WILD DUCK), and I finished "Death of a Salesman" and "The Glass Menagerie" last night. Great plays.

And in the political arena, "Useful Idiots", which I feel like an idiot while reading because I really don't know that much about the Cold War. Hence, I'm learning it.

The memoirs of General George S Patton, very interesting for us World War 2 buffs.

I recommend The Lovely Bones. It's told from the point of view of a fourteen year old girl who is raped an murdered, but it isn't morbid. The Five People You Meet in Heaven was very, very good.

I just wanted to second the recommendation for "Curious Incident..." Great read and it goes in a different direction than I expected.

read anything by Carlene Thompson. Her books are so "edge of your seat" entertaining. I have not once guessed the killer in any of her books. She is definetly one of my favorite authors. Also, read SLAUGHTERHOUSE FIVE (Great, great, great book) and WONDER BOYS (great, great, great book and movie)

I love The Lovely Bones...heard about it sometime last year and had to hunt it down. It was a great book.

Naked by David Sederis. This is a book that came out a few years back and was very popular. He ahs had two more published since then, ME Talk Pretty One Day and a new one, the title of which escapes me. They are humorous short stories about his life and family. Mostly about growing up gay in a working class Greek family. I hadn't read them before, thinking the humor wasn't thetype that would be of interest to me. Then I strted listening to him as a regular contributor on This American Life, an NPR show.

For anyone looking for a light, fun summer read, I suggest Patricia Cromwell's books featuring the character Kay Scarpetta, a state medical examiner. Very much edge of your seat novels with a lot of forensic investigation. I'm fascinated by that field.

Forgive if this post shows up two or three times. It's not showing up as going through.

I put down THE FATE OF THE ROMANOVS the day after the Tonys to read WICKED. I am just about to start MIRROR MIRROR by Maguire and will probably read his stepsister book right after that.

I know a lot about the Romanovs any how.

I am sure you will enjoy the Maguire books -- I think there has been plenty posted about W -- it is a favorite NOVEL of mine...

I really enjoyed Mirror/Mirror -- I could not get into Stepsister or Lost at all...

I'd also add The Time Travelers Wife to the list -- great read, great combinationof love story and time travel (I know you don't usually associate those two together, but this book had me hook line and sinker)

Here here to Lovely Bones -- a haunting and redeeming story at the same time...

To plug a novel of my friend -- try "The Honey Wall" by Karen Latuchie -- great character development and explorations

Nina, the new Sedaris is called "Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim" and it's brilliant.

My pick so far this summer is "Dry" by Augusten Burroughs. You need to read this -- as well as his previous "Running With Scissors."

I hated the film of Fight Club and I started reading Lullaby, but couldn't finish it. A friend of mine is reading Choke, but hates it. I don't understand the appeal of Palahniuk and from what I have heard of his novels thus far, they all have pretty much the same stock of characters. I feel the same about Irvine Welsh. Too repulsive for me.

I just finished "Shadowmancer" by G.P. Taylor. Fans of fantasy / Harry Potter / Tolkien books might like this one. It moves very quickly. I bet there will be a movie made from this novel in the next few years.
