The thing is, as she says, it SHOULDN'T be anything extraordinary - it should be human.
But, the fact is that society seems stuck in a particular rut, and so the stance does become one of bravery and risk.
I THANK HER for being willing - would that more would do the same.

Hathaway starred in the Encores! production of CARNIVAL.
My favorite was her opening monologue. She met the Prince of Nigeria online and loves him so much she sent him $100,000 to finance his mission. Incredible.

Why is that new guy being used so much? Why doesn't Will- I mean Orville William Forte- do as much as he used to? Kristen Wiig is brilliant! She is so morphable! I do really like Anne and how she is recovering from the horrible relationship. I've seen her on David Letterman a few times but I get the feeling that he doesn't like her that much. He always kisses the hand of the women he likes to interview- like Julia Roberts- but I never see him kiss her hand.

the Mark Wahlberg sketch was the best damn sketch of the whole night! and Anne Hathaway as host is proably my favorite episode so far this season of SNL...
yeah they do seem to be playing the new guy and girl alot... in almost all the sketches... i know that when Kristen Wiig made her debut (the hilarious sketch where she played Megan Mullaly at the christmas tree lighting) they put her in alot of sketches in the following weeks... the difference being she actually was FUNNY! the new guy and girl are OK... the girl hasn't done anything memorable to make me laugh... the guy actually has... i did like his sketch where he played the waiter.. but other than that... these two need to show some good skills doing impersonations of famous people... or at least create a GOOD funny character...

I adore that speech that romantico posted. Just beautiful.
And I believe Hathaway was under consideration for Johanna in the Sweeney Todd film, but Tim Burton wanted to go for an unknown.
Still, Anne is a great talent and I loved her last night on SNL.

I felt the Mark sketch was like a fake Brian Fellows... he even sounded like it on some words.

Would love to see Hathaway getting an Oscar nod for RACHEL GETTING MARRIED. The trailer looks great and the reviews from Toronto are glowing towards her performance. She is so lovely. I thought the reason she didn't do the PHANTOM movie was because of her contract with Disney to do PRINCESS DIARIES 2. Either way, as Besty said, it is obvious it didn't hurt her career not doing it... it just hurt the audience who had to sit through Emmy Rossum's terribly bland and disappointing performance.
Her Elphaba would indeed be wonderful, but most of all I would die to see her as Louise in a GYPSY movie re-make opposite Kristen Bell as June.

best12bars, form what I understand when she signed the contract for Princess Diaries I it said that if there was a Princess Diaries II that she would reprise her role for the second film. She did audition and I think she did get the part but she had to back out because of her contractual obligations with Princess Diaries.

I've loved her since The Princess Diaries, I'm becoming a bigger fan everyday!
And if anyone saw "Ella Enchanted" she sang very well in that also. I would love her to come to Broadway at some point.
And if they do go through with the Wicked movie, she should definitely be considered for Elphaba.
I'm rooting for an Oscar nomination for her as well! I can't wait to see Rachel Getting Married.

Actually, no, winston89, Anne Hathaway didn't get the part of Christine, and I find this to be a really weird, subtle cover-up, after the fact. At the time, there were announcements that Joel Schumacher (a real jerk sometimes) was considering BOTH Hathaway and Emmy Rossum for the part in Phantom and further testing was needed with both actresses, including a blessing from Lloyd Webber.
Then he announced that Emmy had gotten the part. I remember seeing an interview with him saying that he chose Emmy "over" Anne (which was a bitchy thing to do), and later an interview with Hathaway saying how she was very disappointed that she didn't get the part after screen-testing for it multiple times.
Now, flash forward... you look on all these websites and they say she turned it down. Funny how history can "bend" things over time. That's not at all what happened and it's not what was announced to the media. And it's not at all what Schumacher and Hathaway both said on camera back then. I'm sure those interviews are nowhere to be found. They probably didn't want it "hurting" her career. But I remember hearing how she lost the part, but came "this close" to getting it.
Yet, now she "turned it down." Oh, well...
EDIT: Hey, Charlotte Church is saying she "turned down" the role of Christine. In fact, she was asked to lose 17 pounds before they would even screen test her for the part. She declined to lose the weight, so she never tested.
That's not exactly "turning down" the role, though.

Ahh, thanks for the nice trivia update, Besty. I had read that Hathaway was heart-broken when she couldn't do PHANTOM but the reasons given were that Disney was not willing to work with her and the PRINCESS DIARIES 2 schedule. Thanks for making things a bit clearer.
That's quite funny about Charlotte Church, although good for her for not losing the weight. The movie was quite the fiasco either way, I'm glad it didn't hurt Patrick Wilson's film career (couldn't care less about Emmy Boring Rossum or Gerard Butler... or the disastrous Schumacher).
I definitely think Hathaway is a wonderful actress who seems to be rather promising. Along with Emily Blunt and Ellen Page, I think she is the most promising young actress working today. I hope her career keeps getting better and better... and that she does some stage work here and there.

Thanks, Ray. I don't know if it's clearer or not. It's probably more confusing now. I know what was said back then in interviews, and I hear (and read) what's being said now. And it's not the same thing.
I'm thinking there's a grassy knoll involved, and perhaps the Masons were out there covering up the real winner of the Christine Daae screen test.
That's what *I* think.

Whatever the reality, I'm glad she wasn't involved with the project, considering how it turned out.

Besty, I think you just unveiled the plot for M. Night Shyamalan's next movie
And honestly I'm more likely to believe your story about what happened "then" that the stories that are going around now.
And Q, I most definitely agree with you.
Going back to that clip... would love to see someone ask Julie Andrews about it.

Q, that was (I think) my whole point. It was a blessing in disguise that she didn't get the part.
...and I was thinking that the story of her having to back out due to scheduling conflicts doesn't make any sense. Neither film had a production schedule that "suddenly moved." So why was she screen-testing multiple times for a role that she could never play in the first place, due to "scheduling conflicts." If the shooting schedules had really overlapped, she would have been out of consideration before she even went up for the role. That excuse makes no sense.
(there, I'm done now)
