Somewhere out there, there is a video of the Sweeney production sherslave and I were in. Alas, mine was lost many years ago, but it was a pretty good production. It was in a very small 3/4 space and I loved hearing the screams and squeals from the audience sitting so close to the suirting blood and violence on stage (I was one of the victims during the Act II Johanna sequence). It was fun.
robbiej - I also sang first tenor and that is still possibly the most difficult music I've ever sung. The choral music is much more difficult than anything sung by the leads in that show.

Its funny, I saw the movie after work yesterday and I liked it.
I saw the most recent production on Broadway. After the movie, everyone just grabbed their coats and left during the credits.
I was waiting for Johnny and Helena to come out for the curtain calls :) but they didn't as everything just went black.

I haven't read anyones report on what they thought of the movie, cuz I haven't seen it yet. It is rated R and I am too young to see it by myself so I have to pleed with my older brother or sister to take me which they haven't or wait for my parents to see it which is like waiting for moss to grow on a rolling stone.

I finally got a chance to see it yesterday. I walked out of that theatre on wobbly legs and wanted to just turn around and watch it again. It was absolutely brilliant. I mentioned in another post that I've been a fan of Johnny Depp's acting since Benny and Joon and watching him breathe life into what is essentially a one-note character didn't surprise me in the least. The real revelation for me was Helena Bonham Carter's Mrs. Lovett. If that performance is due to Burton's direction, then BRAVO to him. I've never been a fan of hers before but I am in awe of her acting ability now! (And I thought her voice was just perfect for this character.)
Perhaps it helps that I'm only superficially familiar with the stage production. I saw the Kennedy Center performance but it doesn't begin to compare with this. I now have a new favorite horror film!

I saw it today, and loved every frame of it. Easily the finest live-action musical in decades. Burton's masterpiece. Splendid performances from everyone. I cannot wait to see it again.

I'll go out on a limb here and say you liked it even better than "Chicago," Roscoe.

Well, yes, of course I liked it more than CHICAGO, but that's hardly surprising.
SWEENEY TODD is a film by a talented filmmaker. CHICAGO is the work of a genetically defective blindfolded babboon.
Simple, really.

I am the furthest thing from a good film critic, so please be patient with me, lol. My dad is visiting from FL and we went to go see the movie this afternoon. He is not exactly a theater lover, but he has always had a thing for this show. I have vague memories watching the VHS of the OBC when I was very young. He was also able to see the memorable Paper Mill production MANY years ago. So it was cool to be able to share this experience this with him, since I will shamefully admit I did not have THAT much knowledge about the show.
Well, at the end of the movie my father looked at me and said "That was amazing. I can't believe how much I actually enjoyed that!". And from a novice perspective, I immensely enjoyed it too. I read a lot of this thread already so I had a pretty good back log of knowledge and I agree with a lot that has already been said. HBC didn't bug me but didn't wow me either. She got better as she started to crack, and the scenes with Toby were heartbreaking, but I couldn't understand a damn word of "Worst Pies in London". Depp was menacing and creepy yet you felt for him and wanted him to get his revenge! The soulless stare in his dark eyes sort of "stunned" you in a way. The lack of further explanation of the Anthony/Johanna thing did bug me. But that is the type of thing that would bug me even if I didn't have some inkling that there was more in the original material. I hate things that just seem randomly thrown in there. I do not like horror or bloody films at all, but this didn't really bother me because I didn't see it being excessive. You are slitting someone's throat, it is going to spurt and come out in quantities. But then again I've seen blood spurting out of real humans a time or two, so I may be a bit numb to it.
Overall, I am a newly converted Sweeniac (is that the correct term?). I am going to bump up the OBC DVD on my netflix list and hopefully catch this again while it is in the theaters!

I've got to get back - soon.
A beloved nephew
gave me a gift certificate to the movie theatre where Sweeney is playing. I've only used it once - for this film. I may end up using it all on this film!
(Although I really do want to see The Kite Runner).

3 times and counting. It just gets richer with each viewing.
Cheyenne Jackson tickled me. AFTER ordering SoMMS a drink but NOT tickling him, and hanging out with Girly in his dressing room (where he DIDN'T tickle her) but BEFORE we got married. To others. And then he tweeted Boobs. He also tweeted he's good friends with some chick on "The Voice" who just happens to be good friends with Tink's ex. And I'm still married. Oh, and this just in: "Pettiness, spite, malice ....Such ugly emotions... So sad." - After Eight, talking about MEEEEEEEE!!! I'm so honored! :-)
