TCM Summer Under The Stars: Ann-Margret - August 13, 2015

I was happy to see Ann-Margret was getting her own day this time around for TCM. They are showing some of her greats too; Viva LV is probably the best Elvis movie but with AM it's a stand-out (just watch the opening credits on a letterboxed wide screen tv). You'd never think that Sally Benson who wrote Meet Me In St Louis wrote Viva too. I'm anxious to see Tommy again, I haven't seen it for years. Her talent and charm is so underrated IMO.

TCM really out did themselves programming their Ann-Margret day. Almost every film airing is a touchstone in her widely varied career and they had the good sense to include her two Oscar nominated performances (Carnal Knowledge, Tommy), her film debut (Pocketful of Miracles), the movie that skyrocketed her to fame (Bye Bye Birdie), her electrifying pairing with The King of Rock 'n' Roll (Viva Las Vegas) and a great comedic gem (The Cheap Detective).

It's a pretty definitive line up.

It's a shame TCM can't show TV movies like WHO WILL LOVE MY CHILDREN...

Or her killer Blanche in STREETCAR

The good news, Steve, is that the entire film is like the Christmas scene. Russell's TOMMY really puts the "opera" in "rock opera". It is one of my favorite film musicals.

Taz, my sense at the time was that the film was too pop for rock fans and too rock for pop fans. However BoxOfficeMojo says it grossed over $34 million domestically (making it the 29th highest grossing musical of all time!); my dim memory is that it was no SOUND OF MUSIC but not shabby for 1975. I suppose that combining the audiences for Margret, The Who, Elton John and Tina Turner didn't hurt the b.o.!

Ann-Margret was widely praised and nominated for a Golden Globe and an Oscar, as was Townsend for the music. Daltrey was also nominated for a Golden Globe.

People I knew in 1975 found it just plain "weird", but I was sorry Russell never reached that level of filmmaking again.

Info listed by the Christmas scene lists Ann-Margret complete filmography, TCM did choose very good films. I wish they were showing State Fair; also I've never seen Newsies the movie, what does AM do in that?

I own this boxed set. It's pretty much definitive. It includes everything she every recorded that was released and some vaulted tracks from her years recording for RCA Victor.

It also includes some tracks from the STATE FAIR soundtrack that was released on Dot Records as well as recordings from the musical numbers she performed in the film MADE IN PARIS (which never had a proper soundtrack release) as well as the recordings from the songs she performed as "Ann-Margrock" on THE FLINTSTONES.

It doesn't include any of her tracks from DAMES AT SEA, TOMMY, REBUS, her MCA disco album or THE COWBOY AND THE LADY which she recorded with Lee Hazlewood for his LHI label.

Also included is a hardbound book with full color pictures from her films and RCA photoshoots, an interview, an essay on A-M's recording career as well as detailed information on recording sessions.

It's most definitely for the die-hard A-M fans.

I purchased this way back in 1999 at Footlight Records back when it was a brick and mortar store down in the East Village.

"My Goodness, Carlos! Thank you so much for doing all that work; now that I see it, that surely looks like something I would enjoy. The Bear Co. does a great job. I bought the 4 boxes in the Doris Day set. They are listed and played chronologically and about 20-22 cds and 4 big coffee table books, so the Ann-Margret looks like it was done the same way, based on ownership rights.

Can't wait until tomorrow
