re: I Survived The Holocaust!

Honestly, emcee...

You've been here long enough. You were around for the creation of the Off-Topic Board, no? Remember the days, pre-OTB? When people would just FREAK OUT over the number of political posts and such. The demand was high enough to create a separate board. Now...MANY here believe that there is demand enough to create a Students' Issues Board. This way, if you have a question about, say Algebra 2/Trig, you can go there and post it...and someone who may know the answer, or who just wants to commiserate can do so. How many times do people post about a school issue, don't get a response immediately, and then incessantly BUMP BUMP BUMP BUMP BUMP?

No one is saying you have to stay there. And who says 45-year-old grad students can't use it either? What Namo is saying (and I completely agree with) is that the demand for a Students' Issues Board is there, so why not just make it. I mean...we're not gonna heard you into cattle cars and ship you east (just to keep this thread on-topic).

This isn't about segregation. No one's going to keep you from joining the other two boards. And really, if anyone is too lazy to simply CLICK ON A TAB...those people don't deserve to live.

re: I Survived The Holocaust!

Actually, I wasn't. There was an OT board when I joined, as well as the when I first stumbled upon the site... which was probably about a few weeks before I registered.

This high demand you speak of, though - and I think it was obvious from Jose's infamous thread, and the people who would be separated don't agree. Only the people who want them to BE separated think this is a good idea. What does that tell you? The demand is had by people who are sick of the kids, not by the kids themselves. Stop trying to make this look so PC and saying "oh, but there's demand for it!" It's not universal. Maybe you all mean it when you say you don't want to just ship the younger posters away, but it reads as total hypocrisy. Obviously it's going to be the younger "majority" word versus everyone else's, because as I keep saying, this isn't something the two sides are going to see eye-to-eye on, and the continual hashing out is absurd.

Who says that, if you're shoving all of these whiny kids away in one corner to talk about high school and middle school academic dealings, a 45-year-old grad student would bother, let alone find any use in this student board? Weak argument - this isn't being proposed for academia, it's being proposed to filter out what can sometimes be viewed as childish nonsense, and what God forbid, should just be dealt with.

People, people, people, people, people. If you simply post a relevant subject to your thread, then people can choose if it is a topic that may interest them. No new boards. No segregation of students. Love. That's all. See, I changed the subject of my post to reflect the content. If only I had started this thread. So go now, and pick a thread that really interests you and dig in deep and share your thoughts with the students and the non-students. Love. That's all.

re: I Survived The Holocaust!

i tend to agree that the board's demographics seem to be shifting younger and younger but i would think that several things are going on. the "older posters" we speak of are from bww's inception two years ago. they've "gotten over" this newfangled board and moved on, or tired of the negativity and moved on, or tired of the childish (posts by children?) posts and moved on.

for whatever reason people come and they go. while the off-topic board was a natural progression of the original bww idea, how far do you dilute that into separate and segregated boards. and if someone posts something on a "forbidden board" who is going to sort out which of the upteen boards it should go on.

if students, kids, younger adults take over the board so be it. i'm sure you won't hear the moderators complaining about it, and if they don't want it to be that way, well they'll impose an age restriction. until then, get over it. read what you want, when you want and stop bitching about it. it is, after all, just a message board.

I'm not sure what you're thinking emcee...but, were it to work the way the OT Board works, which I believe is what people are imagining here, no one has to choose which board to be a part of. You can go freely between them. There are many younger posters here whose input is highly regarded (dare I say, emcee, you're one of them). Do you honestly think you could come here and talk ONLY about school? No...it's just one of your interests...one of many's interests apparently. But there are also a number of people here who no longer go to school and feel like the sheer volume of school posts is overwhelming more interesting topics that get pushed aside.

This is NOT what Jose was suggesting with the 'Adult Only' board. It's simply another section to which people who wish to talk about school can do so freely. And I can choose to ignore it altogether...or not. Why do you think it's a matter of 'You can only post HERE!' It's not.

It just sounds like everyone's getting their backs ruffled over misunderstandings.
I think splitting off the board could be ok if done tastefully. The simple truth is that this board has grown so much that topics are buried three pages in so quickly by many, many other similar postings. Maybe there'll be a way to create a few categories of off-topicness...

It's not the same, but looking at this from the opposite perspective (why am I the only one being vocal... at all?) it looks similar. Obviously it wouldn't be a situation where kids aren't *allowed* to post in one place or another.

I just don't feel like it's such a valid reason to create another board that topics are getting pushed aside. They don't disappear. I'm not saying I love reading a thread on every single topic I ever studied in high school anymore than someone else does, but I can't get myself to see why this is such an issue. Maybe I'm just being stubborn 'cause I'm a kid. Either way, I just don't see why THIS one factor is something that needs to be filtered out, as there are plenty of things all over that pop up a lot that people get sick of. I think if there were to be several off-topic categories proposed, it would at least come off as being a little more banal, but when you're singling out one group, it doesn't come off as very tasteful. I'm also not sure I can see why the fact that so many younger people here, according to some, is so bad. These people are here because they love theatre - it's obvious that most people are appreciative of that, but if other concerns in their lives are being pushed aside in a blatant "we don't really care" manner, what's that saying to them?

There are many younger posters here whose input is highly regarded (dare I say, emcee, you're one of them).

And thank you. A call for informative subject lines.

Hey Emcee, I've been pretty vocal too. I don't feel like arguing anymore though. I may actually be in favor of this idea to radically redeign the site so there are more categories that are readily identifiable. That this seems to spring out of a hostility toward a certain group of posters is what bothers me.

I stand corrected, you are as vapid as they say.

I'm sorry, penguin, I didn't mean it that way - I'm just surprised there aren't more people pouncing. I think I like to argue, or something.

I think "Topic" and "Off-Topic" pretty much covers all the bases.

anything else confuses my simple mind.... A call for informative subject lines. A call for informative subject lines.

Since you weren't around when the Off-Topic Board came into being (has it really been in existence that long???), I can assure you that's EXACTLY how the OT Board came into being. There was an obvious desire by a good number of people to discuss other things...mostly political...sometimes movies. Since Rob was dedicated to keeping the message board on topic, but was also attuned to how the flow of discussion was going, he created the OT Board. There are members here who rarely, if ever, post on the regular message board any more. And then there's a large number of us who float freely between the two, unhindered. It's a glorious thing!

An 'Educational Board' (better name I think) would be free of people saying 'NO ONE CARES ABOUT YOUR EXAMS!!' It could also be a place where, if people needed advice about which songs to sing for class (or audition or what have you), those types of things can be posted. It would give theatre professionals a reason to visit and maybe check things out.

Only a bit over a year, really. A call for informative subject lines.

The creation of OT makes perfect sense, but that wasn't singling any people out. The way this is looking has a lot of potential to look like certain people associated with these topics are unwanted. General off-topicness doesn't do that. I'm reluctant to believe that if it were separate, and the threads weren't rightly visible, people would care enough to help, like was done for those kids studying for the AP History exam.

I see the '03' and I think it's forever ago.

I guess the thing is...it's not about people...it's about topics. Or, to be even more specific, a wealth of one particular topic.

I know that. But you have to understand that it can become about people, because of association.
