Thanks for the phone number. I'll call before I leave the house. If I get a human voice, I can ask my question and get the right answer.

Here's what I found out. I have DirecTV with TiVo and the TiVo/DVD recorder will not work with it. I don't quite get it. Maybe I forgot something the sales person said, but when I pointed to a stack of boxes of DirecTV/DVD recorders, I was told it wouldn't work for me. ???? I guess I'll go back to buying a DVD/VHS recorder or perhaps just a DVD recorder and skip the VCR because I already have a VCR. Yes, I have satellite connections in my living room, office and bedroom.

I'm confused, do you have a DirectTv receiver with tivo?
or do you have a tivo/dvd recorder?
I have Direct TV and have the above mentioned Toshiba Tivo/DVD recorder and it works fine.

I am also totally confused. Why on earth would you not be able to use tivo with any tv you want if your sets are already recieving the satelite signal? that makes no sense.

Yes I have DirecTV in three rooms and one of those rooms has a TiVo box, which I purchased from DirecTV. You have Toshiba Tivo/DVD recorder with your DirecTV? Then it should work for me. I need to do my homework on this topic. I'm being misled by sales people or I'm not understanding what they're saying (or asking the right questions). More phone calls or back to the store!! Thanks.

I think CaTG, you need to get a regular satellite box from DTV and then connect the Toshiba.
Otherwise you have a tivo copying from another tivo, if I'm understanding you correctly.

But it doesn't sound like she is putting both machines on the same TV.

OK, I did my homework and made phone calls to DirecTV and the TiVo phone number noted on this thread. The DirecTV rep basically referred me to the TiVo company. I called them. It would cost me an additional $12.95 (or that lifetime fee) to buy a DVR-TiVo ($399 after $100 discount) that I would hook up to my existing unit. I think my best bet if I want TiVo in a second room is to buy a second unit through DirecTV (like the one I already have) for $99. Installation is free and I would pay no additional monthlly charge for the second TiVo.

Then back to deciding what kind of separate DVD recorder to buy. The decision, too, is whether to buy a combination DVD recorder/VHS recorder like the Sony or Toshiba brands that I've had my eye on OR just to buy a DVD recorder. Somehow I'm still leaning toward the combo. Less machines and I'd like to transfer some old videos to DVD.

So there it is. Thanks for all of your notes of help and the suggestions you've offered.

"I also love that I can be away from my house and go on any computer and ask my tivo to record any show I might have forgottn to program."

Hey, Iris! How do you (or would I) accomplish this?

re: TIVO

TIVO is sooo cool! When I was in my vacation in USA,
I was in our family friend's house and they have the latest one.
Now in Israel there is a new thing that do the same thing
like TIVO, but it's not as good as tivo...

You can only accomplish that if the tivo recorder is a tivo2 series machine. Ask your satelite provider if the machine they are sending youis tivo2. then all you have o do is go to the tivo website and you can program stuff from your computer.

TiVo2 Series? OK. Will do. Thanks! I just love technology, though at times, it needs to sink in before I grasp the whole concept. I'd love to access my TiVo via my computer at those infrequent times when I've forgotten to set my recorder.

Good. rember; it has to be a tivo 2 machine so you can use the homemedia option ( which is what you want)

Iris, when did you purchase your TiVo 2 machine? Recently? I went to the DirecTV site to order a second TiVo and when it didn't say whether or not it was TiVo 2, I called. It isn't, but he said I might want to wait a few weeks and check back. Maybe that would be something they'd have at a later date, I'm willing to wait.

re: TIVO#69

Posted: 1/27/05 at 10:05pm

I would definitely wait at least a month. Directv is suppose to be releasing new machines and tivo plans. Wait.

Waiting is probably the best idea. I did call TiVo and they said the Tivo2 has been out for quite some time and doubted DirecTV would carry that versiion. I'll wait and see what happens. There's no big rush for a second TiVo nor a DVD recorder at this time.
