#1Talk Here About NBC's "Clash of the Choirs"

Anyone see this last night? It was better than I expected. I watched cause four students from Oklahoma City Univeristy's musical theater and opera program are in the Oklahoma City choir (including the two brothers in that heart wrenching elimination).
While I hated the after performance "everyone was swell" comments by the other celebrity choir leaders, overall it was interesting.
Philly and Patti LaBell are the obvious leaders. They did a high powered number which got the crowed going. I do hope they show some versatility in their musical selections. The worst was Michael Bolton's New Haven choir doing a lame Bon Jovi song. I was also dissapointed in Kelly Rowland's Houston choir's number "Freedom". Nick Lachey's Cincy was very good. Blake Shelton (a collective..who??) was the most real celeb..down to earth and an honest guy. I think their song choice was poor, but they sounded better than Bolton and Rowland's.
Who will get elinimated tonight (Tuesday)? Bolton.

I watched and was suprisingly entertained a few times. I wish that Nick Lachey's choir had not gone first, because they were quite good and left me thinking the rest would be good as well (I had little hope for him.) I was very wrong.
Kelly's was fair, but with such a great song that should have lent itself to choral singing, the arrangement didnt work for me.
Bolton's was pretty bad, mostly due to poor direction/arranging and song choice. Why do bon jovi? Why did that dude sing practically the whole thing by himself? It was like Bolton was singing himself with some background vocalists doing oos and aahs.
The country guy's was just okay for me...nothing special.
Patti's was quite special, with several great soloists and someone who grew up singing choir gospel, I expected them to be good, but i was even surprised...and being from Philly, I will have to root for them...though my secret hope is that Nick's group continues to shine.
I hate that they ask the other celebs how the choir did...I REALLY hate that each choir had their sob story/vote grabbing story. Now that we've seen how they were made up, I hope it goes to 1 hour and I'll watch again.

I thought Lachey's choir was pretty damned good too.
I'm hoping that they actually do some music that requires the choirs to sound like choirs and not hopped up backup singers at an amusement park. The forced energy and scream your guts out performances wore thin...at least for me.
It would be nice to hear how they blend, how good there intonation is, if they can use any other dynamic other than forte and if they can ennunciate. WORDS people, you're not just singing notes.

Posted: 12/18/07 at 1:39pmI agree, JAG, and that's what Nick's team did the best, actual choir music and appropriate choir choreography.

I totally agree that Nick Lachey's choir was my favorite followed by Patti LaBelle's.
Michael Bolton's choir was the worst by far. It was basically a solo with with the rest of "choir" providing ooo's and ah's and it only showcased that "TGI Friday's Karaoke Night" quality vocalist.
I too hated the sob stories. If that is a dream come true then some of those people need to dream bigger. I think it's a great opportunity to be apart of something like that for the experience and it's great that there is a prize that goes to charity but no one is going to rise to stardom from this.
Overall, I found it hoaky and entertaining all at the same time. I will probably continue to watch.

Posted: 12/18/07 at 2:06pmI'm hoping Patti's goes all the way. I am a Philly native, but someone I know is in her choir so I want to hear his solo.

Posted: 12/18/07 at 2:08pmThere is another thread on this subject that has several comments about last nights overall disappointing show. It was labeled clash of the choirs.

Posted: 12/18/07 at 2:29pmMy caveat with Patti's choir was that the arrangement was just so slick. I'm wondering how big a hand her Musical Director had with not only the coaching of the choir, but in it's arrangement as well. They carried it off, no doubt about it, but I would really like to see the "celebrity directors" actually working with the choirs and directing them.

So is the ability to not be an asshole.
#10re: NBC's 'Clash of the Choirs'
Posted: 12/18/07 at 2:46pmThe sob stories turned me off, so I turned the channel. The father from the father/daughter team wasn't even that good, so we know the "powers that be" thought their story made for some good television. Wrong. When things border on, "woe is me, so I deserve a break" (sense of entitlement), it turns me off.

It was a hoot when someone bad would sing and Patti would try to hide her laughter with her hat. To cover she said to the people auditioning something like "hearing talented people sing makes me laugh".
Does anyone know the exact thing she said?

Hey Elphaba...Guess what? Before I started this thread, I searched the main and second page and guess what..no Clash thread! So take your seach feature and stick it.
Back to topic. Patti will take the prize. But in reality, it is much harder to find such good singers in places like New Haven and OKC. Houston should have rocked. Cincy kinda did. I do hope we won't be hearing all gospel numbers from Philly. Those types of songs are usually "get the crowd going" kinda numbers. Let's see them do Bon Jovi! LOL
I hope they don't single out any more sob stories. Will the Silver Fox be the new reality Tv star?

Posted: 12/18/07 at 3:38pmThe comment about New Haven being difficult to find good enough singers doesn't make sense. If the show was holding auditions in the area, I'm sure the notice was put out in numerous publications, so the pool would encompass a larger area throughout the state (especially its proximity to NYC).
#14re: NBC's 'Clash of the Choirs'
Posted: 12/18/07 at 4:19pmI dont think there is anyone from NY in Bolton's choir.
#15re: NBC's 'Clash of the Choirs'
Posted: 12/18/07 at 4:30pmNo I didn't mean that, I meant that because of the proximity to NYC, CT more than likely has its share of talented folks.

Wow! The worst choir stays???Come ON!! Bolton's choir needs to go!! They ruined River Deep tonight.
WTF was Lachey Garth Brooks song?? Talk about community theatre! Stupid.
Patti still rocked. Blake's was second.

Posted: 12/18/07 at 10:10pmI thought Bolton's choir sang Ain't No Mountain High Enough. Check out the responses on the thread I started 4 days ago. Thanks, mom

Is there any chance of voting Maria Menounos off. Talk about a waste of good air.
I was underwhelmed with all of the choirs tonight. Why must they have to "sell" everything, it so manufactured and unbelievable. I'm not getting the "choir" aspect of this at all. So far they've been nothing but glorified backup singers, for not so good soloist.

Posted: 12/18/07 at 10:21pmAgree on the Maria issue. Her interview with America Ferrera on an awards show was so embarassing. First, she wasn't going to talk to her then she asked her a question like how do you answer the critics who didn't think you should get the job on Ugly Betty. America just looked at her and gave her a gracious answer. Anyway, Maria is NOT the sharpest tool in the shed. She obviously got the job on her looks, not her interviewing or hosting skills. mom

I don't think Maria is as annoying as some of the other relaity hosts (Billy Bush on "You're The One That I Want").
Wed night I hope Bolton finally gets it.
And thanks Mom for particpating on this thread, the offical Clash of the Choirs thread!

Posted: 12/18/07 at 10:26pmIt's not that she's annoying, she's simply inept.

Posted: 12/18/07 at 10:31pmhey Rocky, why is your thread the official one?- because you added NBC in the title. Is it really that big of a deal that someone started a thread about this topic before you. Isn't there someway to combine the 2 threads harmoniously :)

Posted: 12/18/07 at 10:38pmFYI Rocky-looking on page one and two of threads isn't doing a search. Click on the word "search" and threads that were older than two pages will come up.. Not doing this won't get you in jail but it's simple courtesy.
