just for aesthetics, brother DD, I recommend that you drive a few blocks north and then head to 23rd Avenue going by Holy Names Academy...'cause the building is fascinating... (very, very old, as well)... and it will make you forget about that darn rave....
that neighborhood on Capitol Hill is on the edge.. the reason why that cop was so close and could react is that there is always a cop sitting near my mechanic at East Madison at 22nd.. 'cause that's such a crack and $5 ho corner.. yet, just blocks north it's $1,000,000 Edwardians.. go figure.. in between, as the transition occurs quickly over six blocks, you have a few rentals ... hmm
Wow... this even made it to the Today show.
Wow... they released the ages of the kids killed. The two girls were 14 and 15, respectively. At an overnight party... after a rave... surrounded by 20- and 30-somethings. It's all so very sad...

With the crime that you'd think you'd read about deeper in the Central District or even right there at that crack corner, I do believe that nicer area is cursed.
First, remember when I told you I left my old office at 18th & Madison at 2am, just in time to see that a crowd of bangers had gunned down a driver, who then careened across Madison into the opposing lanes and smashed into the bus transit shelter?
Next, there's an event that happened just last Summer..hang loose. That area is nicer where DD is and north.. this is only a few blocks away. I walk my dogs down those streets all the time.. in fact, was on the "party street" the morning before with the dogs. it's a "Transition" neighborhood, with homes valued between $750,000K to $2.5 million a few blocks north and a "crack, meth, $5 HO" corner just a few blocks south.. and those homes in between are very nice old stately homes that have become rentals since the owners are concerned about being so close to the sketchy corner to the south, but overall, it's a great neighborhood..
two blocks away just last year there was this other violent event, closer to the million dollar homes than the sketchy corner.... at the Miller Community Center.. (basically, a block from DD's new place)...
An apt fire downtown displaced the residents of a women's shelter. the entire apt building was gutted and since it was summer, all of the residents were moved temporarily into the Miller Community Center (kitting classes, political meetings, cub scouts, that's who meet there) until housing could be arranged...
a fellow who volunteered at the shelter was apparently dating one of the residents and he had wanted her and her child to move in with him instead of going to the emergency housing at the center, but she was also needing to escape him like she had escaped his husband/boyfriend that caused her to go to the shelter.. so she went to the shelter instead and called him to say she needed time to sort stuff out..
he showed up instead in this stately neighborhood demanding she come out and two social workers (a man and a woman) who were administering the emergency shelter came out to calm him down and keep him from entering .. he rifled them both down, before trying to get in the building, which was immediately locked with people screaming calling 9-1-1... he gunned himself down ..and only after it was over did they find out he was a convicted sex offender and abuser ... the agency that supplied the volunteers to the women's shelter was not doing background checks...
argh... so, we have all these sketchy areas where nothing happens and these nicer areas and the transition sections near them that have these events occur at... I think that area just south and east of DD is cursed...
that includes my building :)
what's odd, Undi, is that the crime rate in Seattle is actually quite miniscule..then you'll hear about things in west Kent (18 miles away where we never go) or Lakewood (50 miles away, where we never go) or North Aurora (9 miles away, where we rarely go), and then this odd little curse... these events have been spaced out about six to nine months apart and have nothing to do with the neighborhood per se... it's very odd....
Undi... ixnay on the thinkingrey...
Ugh... how do they keep their calm like that?
they are either numb...
or among the most disciplined professionals..
or fabulous actors....
or sociopaths themselves..
or the most wonderful people, who upon arrival home, cry and have nightmares..
My guess would be numb and desensitized.
I'm more surprised at how calm the people calling into 9-11 are!
The one link for a synopsis yesterday showed how calm 911 operators could be, but wasn't really the most exciting calls..
but the link below is much MUCH more engaging.. the fear can be heard
I'm hiding in the bathtub with my girlfriend
they still don't work for me. Maybe it's for the best...
DD, I know you probably have cable or DSL at your pad, but I wonder if it was still just loading so slow that your MP3 player was trying to play the 911 excerpts before they were loaded.
speaking of 911 (Seattle's Capitol Hill), there was also a story today about the release of the 9/11 tapes from the Port Authority (NY & NJ) and NYC Fire... the families of the victims sued for their release because they contend that the emergency dispatchers were not trained or equipped to handle the emergency. Google for the story, it's touching and provocative.
I think that house on Capitol Hill is finally calming down... I still see all the flowers and tributes...but the folks camping out in tents on the planting strip between the street and the sidewalk are starting to pack up...
Can you BELIEVE it?
Bring warm clothes! At least in VanCity, it's been overcast and rainy most of the time, with brief patching of sun.
Goody goody, what does one wear to fete Undi?
Undi-wear?
afraid of heights? I most definitely AM.. but I LOVE THE THRILL!! :)
If I keep eating like this, I hope you're not afraid of swaying side to side while at a substantial height!
1 more week! Woo-hoo!!!
Perpetual anticipation...
Seattle prepares for the guest of honor...
As does the city of Vancouver...
We speaketh the truth!
You guys got home pretty early! What time did you leave? How long was the border line-up? (I'd imagine north-bound was much longer than south-bound traffic.) Did Undi get her mug? How were the Falls and Roslin? What's the plan tomorrow?
You're getting those grapes you were raving about yesterday? How was EMP? I haven't been inside before but I remember Paul Allen (the founder) smashed a glass guitar at its inaugeration and people rushed to take the glass shards as souvenirs. (Whatever happened to a t-shirt and postcard?) Are you doing Pioneer Square?
the grapes, Tiff, are groovy! They're very sweet, which I'm not usually a fan of (but Undi apparently is), but these literally tasted like little cold drops of wine.. very, very nice.. :)
I had to betray the secret of the Lower Mainland, btw..
I led them out through Downtown East past the $10 hookers and meth addicts and out East Hastings to Hwy 1, then out past Burnaby and Coquitlam to BC-15 South through Surrey's Cloverdale... we were to the border in a FLASH!
I'm still thrilled over the suspension bridge, girlie!
EMP was interesting, tiff. I hold a serious resentment towards that ugly building, but it's quite cool inside. The Sky Church was quite impressive.
Last eve we drove up to the park that is shown in EVERY movie that takes place in Seattle because of the beautiful views. It really is spectacular.
