I really want to get a tattoo of comedy and tragedy masks...I've already done research and found a design. (As well as searching the posts here!) I can't decide where to put it. I was thinking on the outside part of my right leg just under my knee, but I don't know if that would look stupid or not. What do you think, and if you have tattoos, where are they?
(Almost) 18. I'm getting it for my birthday...and yes, I've been thinking about it for over a year.
How will you feel when you are 60, no longer that "into" theatre and have that thing on your sagging skin for all the world to see?
I say wear a pin or a tee-shirt with the drama masks. Eventually you will realize they are pretty corny and you can just take it off.
As someone who knows....I have three tattoos and hate 2 of them.
Think about it...and then think about it some more.
forehead! forehead! forehead!
oh wait, yer female...
taint! taint! taint!
I'm with those who say 'think about it!'
Right now, it's what all the kids are doing. But it might change in a few years, and you would regret it.
And yes, I have a tattoo. One that means the world to me, because it has a lot of personal meaning/history. It took me many years to finally decide to have something etched on my body for the rest of my life.
Just because I'm 17, don't assume that I don't know what I'm doing. I love theatre, and I think that the masks represent it perfectly. I can definitely see myself showing it to my grandchildren and telling them how glad I am that I got it instead of listening to people who were telling me I only did it because it's cool. I've been thinking about this for a few years, and I decided on a design over a year ago. I've already made up my mind that this is what I want. =)
I have two and I love them both. I would suggest getting it somewhere that is easily covered. One of mine is very small, like the size of a quarter, and on the back of my shoulder, where most tank tops cover. My second is larger and in the small of my back. Yours will be seen any time you wear a skirt or shorts. Tattoos are not the most professional looking thing.
I would also suggest getting something very unique.
I wanted my first for 8 years before I got it at 23 and the second I wanted for 5 years. My friends used to laugh about me going into the tattoo shop to visit my tattoo.
Just think LONG and hard before making a move. That ink doesn't wash off.

Jesus Christ! Then why did you ask? You didn't want people's opinions you just wanted to let everyone know you were getting a tacky, cheesy Drama Mask tattoo! I hope it doesn't get infected. And I hope you enjoy it for the REST OF YOUR LIFE.
Jesus.
stop calling her jesus, you heretic!
...and Sueleen essentially suggested that the best location for it would be on the proverbial back burner.
ETA: I've considered getting a tattoo for about 10 years now and can't decide on anything that I am 100% confident that I'll be comfortable with 30-40 years from now. I am in the group that suggests you give it more time. I have way too many friends who are very unhappy with their tattoos.
Jersey, what is the quarter sized tattoo on your shoulder?

I have three. Just got my third a few weeks ago. I love my first two. They've become a part of me. I'm not in love with the most recent one, but then again it's still in the process of healing. Have to give it some more time. But, it's my experience that eventually they become a part of you and you learn to love them, imperfections and all. Just think it through carefully and don't be too quick to act. And if you're not comfortable with something, whether it be the artist, design, or the placement, don't be afraid to speak up and/or walk away and give it more thought and consideration.
A Chinese symbol. Overdone, I know, but I got mine 7 years ago and no one around me had them at the time. It's the symbol for strength. It did and still does mean a great deal to me.
I have two tattoos, a roll of film on my left shoulder and a camera on my right. I've always wanted a tattoo and waited a few years before deciding on what my first one would be. I left from getting my first one knowing that I wanted a camera on the other shoulder.
I am going to get my third one w/ in a week or so. I'm completely happy w/ the ones I have so far.
My advice would be to look at several tattoo artist portfolios to make sure you like their work. My guy was a dear friend and I knew his talent already. It helps so much if you trust the person. (atleast I think so). Like someone else stated, pick a spot you can show if off when you want but can cover it for work reasons.

This reminds of a story my English teacher once told me.
A former student of his mentioned to him that she was getting the same tattoo of the masks. The place she chose was her...butt. He straight up told her that when she's 80, both of the masks will be frowning. So, the moral of the story? Don't put it on your butt. Bad idea.
I have a friend who has a very pretty drama mask tattoo. It is on her left side, on the waistline. Myself, I would like a ten point star, to symbolise a friend that has recently passed away. He loved tattoos, and we were talking about getting the same one. Now, unfortunately, I will be the only one who gets it. If this is something you love, then do it, no matter how young or old you are. Oh, and happy birthday!!!!
I say get it! You've thought about it. I have 4, and am getting ready to get my fifth. Just be sure that what you get is what you want. I know a lot of people who have the masks...my suggestion...tweak the design in a way to personalize it to you. Happy birthday.
Nah, RobbO, I tell people it's "strength," but the actual translation is "bisexual whore." My grandmother feels better about the first explanation.

Somewhere easily covered. And, keep in mind, that as a performer there are roles (many in fact) where your tattoo will be completely inappropriate and will need to be concealed with makeup, bandage, etc. if in an obvious place, and that is a royal pain in the ass.
