I have the comedy/tragedy masks on my right hip. If you were 'researching through posts' then you probaby saw the picture of mine. In any event, I've worked in theatre for almost 20 years now.... it was only right for me to get that particular tattoo. It wasn't, however, the design I walked into the tattoo parlor with. In fact, what I walked in with was something completely opposite. As my friend was looking at designs trying to find the other part of what she was having done, I spotted the comedy/tragedy masks and I knew it was what I had to have.
My parents gave me permission to get a tattoo when I was 16, but I decided to wait and let the design marinade before I permanently put anything on my body. Ultimately, you're going to do whatever you want, but frankly if I were just a theatre fan (no matter how hardcore) -- not having been in this business for as long as I have -- I couldnt imagine having this on my body forever.
BTW, whatever you decide to do, don't get it where you said you were considering getting it. It'll look trashy as hell when you're 40. (my friend's girlfriend has this ghastly monstrosity of a tattoo on her thigh...... Im sure it seemed like a good idea at the time, but it surely looks trashy -- and makes her look trashy -- now that she's older)
If in Heaven you don't excel, you can always party down in hell...

"Nah, RobbO, I tell people it's "strength," but the actual translation is "bisexual whore." My grandmother feels better about the first explanation."
hee hee, jerseygirl, if i knew you better i was going to say that your tattoo totally meant "whore" instead of "strength."

I'm old with sagging skin and I still love my tattoo. I'm unique, though, because I know myself pretty well and only regret doing one thing in my whole life.
Removing them is painful and costly. Maybe you should put it in a place that you can't see. That way you'll never get tired of it!

A lot of places/people/schools won't hire you if you have too many visable tattoos or if any of them are innapropriate. I'm not saying that the drama masks are innapropriate, because they aren't, I'm just suggesting that if you do decide to get the tattoo, get it somewhere that can be easily covered up a few years down the road.

I waited 7 months after I turned 18 to get my first tattoo. I had decided on a design when I turned 17, but I felt that I should wait until I was ready to get it. Fast forward to this past January, I went it, sat down, and got this:
If you're going to get the comedy/tragedy masks, at least make them look good. I know someone whose tattoo looks like a happy/sad clown. It's disgusting.

Posted: 5/18/06 at 10:52pmMost people I know who have tatoos have put them on their ankles. 3 of my dance teachers have dancers there (they went out and got them together) a good friend of mine has a chinees symbol there (IDK what it means) My gym teacher has an alligator there (our school mascot) Another gym teacher has a soccer ball there. I've seriously considered getting a tatoo and the more I think about it, the more I want it on my ankle.

Posted: 5/18/06 at 11:27pmI got a tattoo right after I turned 18 which was about a year ago. It's a ladybug on the left of my lower back. My parents were mad cause they had said to have the same tattoo in the same spot for a year. Since forever I had wanted a dolphin on my ankle but I decided that most jobs I'd have to cover it up and I might get tired of looking at it all the time. I still love mine even after the fight with my parents. As I told them when they asked what I'd think of it when i'm all saggy "It'll just be backing it's way down to my butt!"

I have mine on my lower right hip/stomach area. Very easily covered, but not necessarily hidden. I had wanted a tattoo since I was 8, but didn't get it until I was 19. It was something I had put serious thought into for years, but didn't actually get it until I had this cataylst event in my life to give me a reason.
I have to agree with what other people have said, I think leg tattoos look really trashy on women- even if it isn't old and sagging, it still looks bad.

Posted: 5/19/06 at 10:10amI agree with the "not on the leg" vote. To me, a tatoo is more of a personal thing than something to show off. They represent something significant to you, and, being a private person, I would want to only show it to those that I chose to show it to (I've been considering a tatoo for almost 10 years). Anyway, I prefer small and someplace that can be covered--like your lower back, foot, or hip. That's just me, though. A leg tatoo really could become problematic. If you're going into performing, you'd have to cover it up--alot. If you're not going into theatre, you'd probably not be able to wear skirts and dresses to work, as visible tatoos aren't exactly office-appropriate.

Posted: 5/19/06 at 5:59pmWow. Thanks for all the great tips! I actually agree with the leg thing - I drew on it and it looked stupid. I think I like the idea of my outer leg, below my hip. I'm not sure I'm going into stage acting...I think I'd enjoy doing voices! Haha.
I remember days
Or at least I try
But as years go by
They're sort of haze
And the bluest ink
Isn't really sky
And at times I think
I would gladly die
For a day of sky

Posted: 5/20/06 at 2:06amI think if I got a tattoo, I'd get a (fairly tiny) tree on the outside of my foot (below the bony protrusion of my ankle) as sort of a "stay grounded" type of reminder thing...lol forgive my poor sentance structure, my brain is fried after 8 hours of frappuccino making and crabby customers.

'How will you feel when you are 60, no longer that "into" theatre and have that thing on your sagging skin for all the world to see?"
scuse me, I'll take this one.....Suleen?....AT 53, NONE OF MY 5 TATTOOS (NOR MY SKIN) ARE SAGGING.........what a ridiculous and stupid stereotype to tell an 18yr old......oh, and how very pompous...
kid, you want a tattoo, YOU GET ONE........listen to no one but yourself.....but think very hard on what you get, it becomes a family member.
and kid, just for the record, one on my upper right arm, two on my upper left arm, one of my back, and one on my left lower leg. Love them all and NEVER regretted it.

Posted: 5/20/06 at 3:24amAs of now I can't think of anything I would want on me unless it was a very simple and very small black cross on the inside of my upper right arm. I also saw somebody I knew with their family crest on their arm and loved that idea. If I would get that I would want it on the inside of my upper left arm. But I don't know if I would ever be sure enough that this is what I wanted.

i forgot to mention i've got one around my ankle and on my foot, 2 on my lower back, and one in the middle of my upper back. and as soon as i get home... think 2 weeks here, i'm getting one behind each ear and one on the back of my neck.
and elphaba, i'm right there with you about getting one if you want. my only concern with my tats is that the color doesn't fade, but that's what sunblock is for.

Posted: 5/20/06 at 11:29ameven if you use sunblock they're gonna fade a little, i have 7 with color and they're all a little bit faded and i even used the sunblock from tattoo goo...i mean the fading isn't really noticeable or anything but yeah if you're in the sun definitely put sunblock on your tats =)

I have a tattoo of the drama masks. It's just above my left shoulder blade. I absoutely love it. It's at a spot I can cover when I want or show when I want. I have two other tattoos and I don't really regret any of them (both on my right leg - inside and outside of my ankle). But I made a point of thinking about each one for at least 6 months to a year before actually getting them. If it was still what I wanted after that time, I got it.
These are my comedy/tragedy masks:
(Taken with a camera phone so the colour is weird)
I put musical notes around them to make them more musical theatre.

while they may fade, they can be re-colored, and a REALLY good tattoo artist can do that without it being obvious they were re-colored.
A tattoo should have special meaning to you, or there is no point. It should be something that truly defines who you are, or a belief you have, or something you love. I had my first one done at 20, the second in my 30's, and the last three in my forties, and they all have significance.
