Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning - Anyone See It?

Did anyone see this movie yet today? I was thinking of seeing it late tonight. Was it really gory and/or thrilling? I haven't seen a horror movie in a while. Was the remake that they filmed a few years ago better in terms of the gore/thrill?

The original isn't a crappy movie at all, assuming one has some sort of understanding of it or film history. It was a very important part of the 70's exploitation movement where a group of post-sxities filmmakers walked away from the more gothic horrors of their upbringings and made some harsh, violent and frightening movies that sat uncomfortably (for a lot of people) close to reality-basesd horror. At times the original feels like a documentary, at times it feels like a home movie and it's not all happy accidents, they knew what they were doing. This was the era of Charles Manson, after all and 'Chainsaw' is very much a product of the world around it, instead of being set in some dank castle or some pristine, unreal world. The sound in that movie is brilliant as it puts so much background noise at the front of the track to up the state of unease and to make the horror more environmental, instead of just being about fumbling around in the dark. Make no mistake about it, most any bit of suspense/horror filmmaking done post-Chainsaw has its origins in Tobe Hooper's 'cult classic.'

The remake, alas, was just another bad horror movie, devoid of any connection to the real world and devoid of the passionate filmmaking of the original. I'll catch the prequel this weekend and hope for the best while anticipating the worst.

I like a good horror movie, but I don't think I'm into the latest trend of torture-horror type stuff lately.

This movie may have had no plot, but I think it had a very important message.

At the beginning they explain how the town died and there was no more food so the few people remaining there decided to eat other people to survive. Throughout the movie you watch the main characters being cut up and tortured and killed and you think oh my dear lord that's HORRIBLE! How SADISTIC of them! You feel for the main characters because they are people just like you and you can't bear to watch them tortured, but if you think about it, this is what people do to animals! This movie helps the audience see what animals feel when they are being killed and tortured.

Now you can say that what I'm saying isn't fair because some animals' heads are just chopped off and they barely feel anything blah blah blah. But even if in this movie they just took the people and killed them, you'd STILL think that was horrible, wouldn't you.

You might also say that these people ate them because they needed to survive, just like how we need to eat animals to survive, but really the people could have just moved away along with everyone else to places that had food. We can just eat meat substitutes. Eating people (for us, eating animals) is just the lazy way out. Blah!

I can't imagine why anyone would defend HOSTEL. A bigger piece of garbage, I cannot imagine. Well, okay, I could imagine; but I wouldn't want to imagine it. I just hated every second of that film. Mostly, because I didn't like any of the characters; and, once that happens, I don't care what happens to them. My issue with HIGH TENSION was the WTF ending. I liked HOUSE OF WAX and the remake of CHAINSAW. Hell, I'm even a tremendous fan of TCM Part 2, a film I feel like everyone hates, because I find it so amusing.

I'm more bothered that someone liked "Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part II." I mean, "Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III," sure, but Part II?
