So your response would be that that person is thin skinned. OK. Tell me what you expect from them. Do you expect them to toughen up? Get thicker skin?
Do you realize that not every person is born to fight? Not every person is born with boxing gloves on their fists. Some people can't take being ridiculed. They get depressed at their inability to fight back, consider themselves a lost cause, and as a result they often commit suicide. Well I guess that solves the problem. They're not around anymore to be told to either toughen up or get out of the way.

Posted: 3/2/07 at 10:09amI don't really get how people could think that saying "that's so gay" has no relation to homosexuality. The fact that saying it has become so much more prevalent in the last decade or so as homosexuality has become more accepted and visible makes it seem pretty clear that its a reaction to homosexuality. It comes from the perception that some people still have of gays being weak and inferior. The fact that someone who just casually uses it doesn't get that doesn't change how it came about. It's different from something like someone calling someone a "faggot" where it's clear that that's a word someones using to disparage someone. When kids say things like "that's so gay" in a classroom it's something that a lot of teachers don't bother discouraging and it can create a negative atmoshphere for the people who are affected by it without a lot of the people who say it realizing the effect it can have.

But school officials say they took a strict stand against the putdown after two boys were paid to beat up a gay student the year before.
I can see why the school is taking a hard line here, although I also agree that mocking the girl because she's Morman was out of line.
I still don't get the basis of the lawsuit. Schools are well within their rights to limit the speech of their students. The first amendment doesn't automatically cover minors in a public school.

This is only true if certain tests are met. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Tinker (the Vietnam War armbands case) that students "do not shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech and expression at the schoolhouse gate." That said, the Court has ruled that freedom of speech can be curtailed if the speech substantially disrupts the educational environment or violates the rights of others; I would think the school is on pretty firm ground in this case.
