Know one will know how many movies will be nominated until the morning of the announcement.

"I like that."
I don't.
I still think it should be only five, and I think they have tainted whatever honor was left in getting a Best Picture nomination.
Five, please. Stop crapping around with it in an obviously desperate attempt to approve your TV ratings. How lame is that?! You've only diminished the already-diminishing respectability of your top honor. Congrats on that self-sabbotage.

That's like saying cancer is better than Lou Gehrig's Disease.
(yes, that was highly dramatic, but you get the drift)

I really like this decision. It also extends to the Animated Feature category with the flexibility element. On the one hand, tiny little films like Winter's Bone might lose out on a Best Picture nomination because they can't get enough of the vote to qualify. But, it might prevent mediocre films like The Blind Side from inconceivably slipping into the Best Picture category. And what happens if one of the front-runners from the critics awards doesn't get 5% of the #1 votes on the ballots? Actual surprise at the Oscars, that's what.
The 5 field tended to be very very safe. Opening it to more nominees added some spice to the ceremony. I think it's safe to say something like District 9 would have never received a Best Picture nomination in a 5-wide field. Up might have missed out, too, or even something like Inception. More nominations meant more diverse films could be recognized as quality. This new rule just makes it a little harder to get in.
