The Blacklist

"?? but what about the Blacklist?"

It's not the worst show on network tv, Jane, but the unfortunate casting choices and implausibilities are too much for me at this point. At least NIKITA on CW knows that it's garbage for superheroine-worshipping females and hetero dudes who like that sort of garbage. But the Blacklist is neither as cleverly written nor as credible as it so desperately wants its viewers to believe. Whenever I tune in, it feels like I'm watching a cable access channel tutorial on special effects for television.

Megan Boone is too bland. She oozes nothing on screen. To me, she's simply not credible in the lead role as a FBI profiler. Her husband Tom (Ryan Eggold) is possibly the most effete man on the planet, on screen at least. His bad side has to be more intriguing. Harry Lennix was totally miscast. That's a huge dude who should have been cast as a big recurring nemesis of Elizabeth/Red, not some generic middling bureaucrat. And Parminder Nagra's acting chops and screen presence are wasted altogether. Spader can't carry the series alone for too much longer, I suspect.

Side Note: the reason why True Blood worked early in the show's run was because the baddie Eric Northman towered over Bill Compton; he was the most powerful villain on the show due to his vampire age; and he wasn't chatty. There was no need for an extreme makeover (or a ton of exposition) to make Eric appear menacing. And Sookie had her magic fingers to level the playing field somewhat. TV is a visual medium.

ETA: Regarding the writing, I've seen and heard it all before. At this point, I can anticipate all the actors' lines, except Red's. The season's highlights have been Reddginton and the woman who played the Cleaner (aka Mr. Kaplan) in the Ep 10 "Anslo Garrick (No. 16 – Conclusion)".
