Finally got around to seeing it this afternoon. LOVED it. Was oddly underwhelmed by Ralph Fiennes' performance, found him a little stiff and uncomfortable in places. I realise his character was supposed to be like that, but there were moments I didn't buy his performance.
Rachel Weisz was glorious. A wonderfully natural performance, I thought she handled some preachy dialogue very well. Effortlessly sexy to boot. I am so happy she's finally getting some recognition as a serious actress after the Mummy movies.
And yes, the direction is fabulous. I thought City Of God was great but a little overdone in places (the flashback within a flashback within a flashback for example) and I did fear I would find it as jarring here. Nope. Extremely well done.

I didn't like it. The film couldn't decide what it wanted to be - romance? thriller? noir? Ralph Fiennes nearly drove me crazy with his "play it all low-key" performance in The End of the Affair and here he's at his old tricks again. The guy doesn't know how to grieve. Funny that I used to have a hard time distinguishing him from Liam Neeson, an actor I'm beginning to admire. I also had some problems with the editing and the cinematography; why all the cuts away from the leads during their conversations and towards the people (sometimes even dirt patches) around them?
I know Focus is considering making this film its major awards horse. My advice to them would be to push the initially-outstanding Rachel Weisz as supporting actress (for her role at first seems prominent, and then she becomes a plot device) and don't discount their other films. Brokeback Mountain and Pride and Prejudice both seem to be more significant films than this "romantic thriller" or whatever the marketers are calling it now.

"PRIDE AND PREJUDICE?!?!?!?
Please."
Hey, I've heard it was surprisingly good. Keyword: Surprisingly, because I sure wasn't expecting much from it either.

Posted: 9/16/05 at 10:06amI'm not sure how Oscar worthy this film is - especially because I'm so in the dark this year about what's to come - but I hope it's remembered for some things, particularly for Rachel Weisz - which I imagine would be up for best supporting actress?

Posted: 9/16/05 at 11:43amIt's a very competitive Oscar season. Last year, RENT probably would have been a major contender in spite of all the concerns about each cast member's age and how dated the material is...
