Nope. Creepy is the word I wrote. Creepy is the word I mean. Creepy...something that gives one shivers or an ill feeling. My goal was not to be helpful or informative. My intent was to indicate I got "the creeps" reading the soirée thread. On several levels.

Also, I'm well aware of the high percentage the NIBRS has reported for various sexual assaults committed against juveniles. I read that 80% of them is by a relative or family acquaintance. Does anyone believe that the killer of Jon Benet had not at some occasion prior to the killing been in her house? So consider me insulting, consider me condescending. I welcome everyone to think whatever they want to think.

etoile, did you post these same objections to the BWW picnics in NYC? Anyone could have read about the plans, showed up and followed an unsuspecting BWWer home. No one here is publically posting full names, pictures, home addresses or other personal contact info. It just seems like in the grand scheme of things, this is MUCH less of a threat that 90% of what is already on MySpace or similar sites. Why would anyone make this much effort when they can just IM some teenage girl to ask her to fly to the Middle East and she'll agree?

Just for the record, I work in a daycare center and my fingerprints are in the system, so that puts a damper on any potential art thievery from me.

Someone who no longer posts on BWW told me of meeting someone on another message board and being stalked by him for weeks afterward.

One can never be too cautious these days.

make sure you inventory all the items in your home prior to the event. have a pre-verified contact number for each guest (in case something is missing after the have left your home.) don't doubt it. stalkers are everywhere. some may even be the friendliest and most out-going posters on your favority message board.

As I said, on the eve of the "Mame" fundraiser (i.e., Friday), only people with whom I already have personal friendships (and I don't mean "electronic" ones) and who are in the group of friends going to see "Mame" on Saturday are coming to my house with their friends--people with whom they have already-established relationships.

The "open event" on Saturday evening at Tryst--a bar in DC--was intended for "everyone" like the NYC picnic, the DC get-together in December and the gathering at Luxia in April. Perhaps that was not made clear. I apologize.

Anyway, to those of you expressing concern because you care about people and their well-being, I say "thank you." It's good to know that there are people out there who actually care about others and want to help in any way they can.

N.B., NIBRS also indicates, "Only 11 percent of the child victimizers in violent crimes are strangers."

If you, etoile, had any idea what Penny does during the day - which you don't because she doesn't post excessive personal info - you would know that she knows probably better than you about that which you preach.

And it bears repeating that you don't know that because she doesn't post private information.

I think some may be surprised at how much information is posted.

Orangeskittles, what do you mean by "these objections" to the picnic? What objections? Why would anyone post objections to an open gathering during daylight in a public park where the consumption of alcohol is prohibited and juveniles were instructed they needed to be accompanied by at least one parent? I don't have anything positive to say about the likes of MySpace or LiveJournal.

N.B., I am familiar with that report and the sentence stated immediately before the above quote, "As figure 9 shows, in incidents where knowledge of perpetrators allows their identification as family member, acquaintance, or stranger, most offenders against juveniles (80 percent) are known to the victim (i.e., the offender is a family member or an acquaintance)." I do know that there are more current studies available. I don't know if anyone wants to continue quibbling about percentages. Seems to me the higher the percentage the higher the need for concern in the home.

Well, I was just sitting here 5 minutes ago with Undi and Jane sipping champagne and knoshing on desserts when Undi announced she was going out for a smoke.

We'd been discussing Tonya Harding and Paris Hilton when the phone rang. I was expecting a call at any minute from DayDreamer, so I went into the library to answer the call. When I returned to the kitchen, four things were missing: Undi, Jane, my original Dan Perez and the Harry and David's bing cherry cheesecake. (Yes, chainstore cheesecake.)

Oh, and Bwayaddict boarded a plane with my husband for Detroit. Detroit! The ultimate insult.

I won't be alone for long though...my children's phenobarbital will be wearing off in a few hours and they can keep me company.

And Mame was good, too.
