I'm from dc but am currently in North Carolina for school. I just had to respond because I worked at Woolly Mammoth this summer and I'm so glad to hear that you're going to see In the Continuum, KChenowethfan! It's an amazing show, and for those of you who didn't see it in New York and are going to be in dc this fall, you should definitely go see it.
Actually, you should really look into Woolly Mammoth's whole season. I've read all of the plays and they are going to be amazing! In particular, you should look forward to "Vigils" in February. I am so unbelievably excited for this play that I might have to buy a plane ticket back up to dc just for the play.

Hi all--
I've chatted with Mamie over in the Greg Jbara thread, but I thought I should make myself known to other BWW DC'ers!
I'm Liz, I live in the District, and I would be very keen to get together for shows! That way my long-suffering boyfriend (not a musicals fan) can catch a break once in a while....

Liz, it sounds like my husband and your boyfriend would get along well. My husband HATES musicals.

Kel, how can ANYONE hate musicals????
KCF, it's so great to "see you" again! How has your summer been?
And Liz, another DC person...how lovely!
As you all know, school started today, so I am off to buy school supplies at Target (and, I hope, nothing else!)
See you all later!!!

Posted: 8/28/06 at 9:21pmI am still trying to figure that one out. Apparently he was ruined by the film version of WSS. He still cringes at the mention of it. He is an engineer and people randomly breaking into song "isn't something real people do" so he can't get into it or enjoy it. Engineers take things too literally.

Posted: 8/29/06 at 11:18amMy bf hates WSS too! It's the gangs dancing that gets him. Gangs don't dance, they fight! He's not able to see the representations of violence, culture, anger etc that are expressed in Robbins' amazing choreography.

Posted: 8/29/06 at 11:23amMaybe their interests 'expand' as they get older? My brother has never been to a Broadway show. He has been to NY a number of times for Yankee's games, but no theatre. He called me last week to find out how to get tickets for he and his wife for "Wicked" in October. She loved the book and he's taking her for their anniversary.

Have him spend a day with me... he'll see real people (if you can call me real) breaking into song quite frequently.
The 5th Avenue Theater is doing a 50th Anniversary Production of West Side Story. I'm so excited... and I'm not even going to the High School of Performing Arts.

The KenCen had a terrific revival production a number of years ago.
OK, a number of decades ago.
I hope your sister-in-law knows that the musical Wicked is quite different from the book.

Posted: 8/29/06 at 11:40amThey both do. You have no idea how hard I tried to talk them out of seeing it just for the book. It's not my favorite show anyway and I tried so hard to get them to consider others. No luck though. (I hope his first experience with B'way doesn't turn out to be his last!)

One of the reasons I married my husband is that he LOVES musicals. It just made everything much easier.

Posted: 8/29/06 at 11:47amYour first experience with something like this can affect your feelings for it for a long, long time. I wish this had come up when DRS was running. I know he would have loved that.

DRS rocked!
Then again, several friends walked out at intermission when it was here.
But back to DC...

I found it tremendously amusing, and I find laughter one of the most effective means to sound health.
Plus, I love Yazbek's music and lyrics.
Not to mention Greg Jbara (which... "I just did.")

I LOVED the original cast... granted, I didn't see John Lithgow.
The tour was great, in my book... though I can't imagine the show without Norbie. And I did miss Greg and Joanna big time!

Posted: 8/29/06 at 3:15pmI'm a fan. Honestly, I usually take in more plays over at Bethesda's Round House Theatre than Arena Stage these days.
#48re: The DC'ers thread
Posted: 8/29/06 at 3:38pmNot been to Bethesda's Round House... only been to the kids theater up there.
