I forgot to mention the credits!
I remember the tv commercials just scaring the crap out of me, and they didnt show a g/d thing...Chris opening the door and "The Exorcist" in the doorway...the door splitting. There's no way I'd see the movie!
I saw Live and Let Die that year (R rated movie, my cousin and I walked in at 10 years old...ah, the good old days) and THAT scared me...Geoffrey Holder and voodoo!!

There is no such thing as "the devil" and there is no, absolutely NO such thing as demonic possession. There is simply misunderstood mental illness and religious mumbo-jumbo created by people who had no grasp of human psychology.
Unless you can physically prove there is no such thing as the Devil and there is no such thing as a demonic possession, I will continue to believe such exists.

LOL Namo
The Exorcist II: The Heretic was campy and awful. I remember watching it (I saw II before I saw the original), thinking "well if the sequel sucks this much, the original can't be all that scary!" booooy was I wrong.

"I agree that the spider walk doesnt belong in the movie, which is why Blatty and Friedkin agreed it needed to be cut. It just doesnt fit where it placed in the film."
See, now that's why I found it so scary. It's the last thing you expected to see. If I anticipate something, it isn't frightening to me.

I don't like the re-cut spiderwalk scene, where the blood drips from her mouth. The other one freaks me out more. She flips over, sticks her tongue out like a snake, and crawls at frightening speed down the hall after her mother and Sharon. So creepy.
Exorcist 3 was actually pretty good, but 2 was just dreadful.

Borstalboy---Guilty as charged!!!
I love Exorcist II: The Heretic. I was a geeky teenager and it was a geeky horror movie. We were a perfect fit.
Things I remember about it:
Linda Blair had huge boobs. Not that I was into it or anything, but I couldn't believe little Regan had "grown up" so very demonstratively.
Innovations at the time: The "ghost glass" trick was very cool at the time, and VERY expensive. They actually had to build her bedroom directly facing (and backwards!) to Louise Fletcher's office set. The action of the past possessed Regan interacting with the current "good" Regan, battling over Louise's fibrillating heart, happened LIVE while they cameras were rolling. The lights faded up and down to reveal the old set, not unlike a scrim would be used on stage. Very cool. Dorky and unnecessary by today's standards.
And the biggest innovation for film in general, not just this one... are you ready? Really ready? The Exorcist II contained the VERY FIRST steady-cam shot used in any feature film EVER. Cinematography was changed for all-time with this lousy flick... no sh*t. It's the shot where Regan is being chased by Father Richard Burton down the aisle of the commuter train, as it whisks them away to D.C. That had never been done before in a movie. (only tested previously) This "scientific achievement" was honored with a Techy Academy Award. And well deserved.
...and I totally loved the creepy-freaky music score by Ennio Morricone, no less!
Oh, and the other really WEIRD thing that happened, and it freaked me out for weeks until Warner Bros. finally confessed to doing it... After the film was initially released for the first week, it was PULLED from all theatres, and replaced with a new print that changed the ending of the film! It was a desperate attempt to "fix" it. And I'm sure a very expensive one.
I went back to see the movie again (yes, okay, I saw it TWICE in the theatre!!) a few weeks later, and I did a total mind-f*ck on myself. I thought I had "dreamed" the first ending, and completely forgotten how the film had actually ended. Seriously!
That was the "most disturbing" thing about this sequel to me.

Posted: 11/1/07 at 5:03pmI didn't know there were two versions of the spider scene. The one I saw which scared me was the one where she traveled at rapid speed.

I think Exorcist III is pretty brilliant. Incredibly scary and disturbing... excellent acting (particularly Brad Douriff, who should have been nominated for it).
It did not get the praise and recognition it deserved.

Posted: 11/1/07 at 5:13pmIsn't Excorcist II the one where we find out the devil is actually a bug? Just step on it, for God's sake! Jesus!

No, no, NO!
The demon Pazzuzuuzzzzuzzzu RIDES on the wings of a bug.
One of them locust-things.
SINGS:
On the Wings of Bug
Only the two of us,
Together flying high...

Posted: 11/1/07 at 5:21pmJane, the one in the Version You've Never Seen is probably the one you saw. The other can be seen in the documentary "The Fear of God," which was featured on the VHS release of the film.

Maybe they could make a fancy new lenticular case that says "You've Never Seen" and "You've Already Seen," depending on the angle you look at it.
How about that?
And then release it all over again... again.

Posted: 11/1/07 at 5:51pmSo let me get this straight, Zapupu can spontaneously inhabit a little girl and f*ck her up real good, but in order to travel, he has to hitchhike on a locust? Seriously, I don't get it. I remember watching it thinking, "Huh." The only part of the movie I liked was the cool doctor's office. The walls were some sort of round polarized windows that would rotate to become dark and opaque so as to provide privacy. At least, that's what they appeared to be. For all I know, they were just animated to appear that way. I watched it a long long time ago. Whatever. Shut up!
