Well, this was unexpected! Could be a smart move. There are already a handful of high-profile flicks on Oscar radar this season.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

For all its big moments, the novel to me has always seemed actually rather intimate.
Yes, and, in fact, Gatsby calls off the big parties about halfway through the narrative, when Daisy says she doesn't care for them. There follows a series of scenes in a hauntingly empty mansion.
So marketing the film as an exercise in Jazz Age excess is either misleading or a bad sign. (FWIW, that's exactly how they marketed the early 70s version. I agree with Eric that it wasn't as bad as people tend to claim, but the parties weren't the best part of the film.)

So....Christmas has come and gone, and B12B's link is defunct. Also, I have yet to encounter a 'Gatsby' trailer in theaters.
Anyone know if/when 'Gatsby' is (still) coming to Town?

It's still coming out. They showed the trailer when I went to see "Les Miz".

Thanks Mister Matt!
I'm even less convinced/even more intrigued than before.
I'm heading out with the dog to play in the snow and then I'm coming home and watching 'Strictly Ballroom'.

Hrmm flashbacks to stuff just barely mentioned in the book? (ie the ship stuff)

Right?
The mystery of Gatsby's past is apparently going to be ruthlessly, relentlessly explained to us in 3-D.
That was the "less convinced" part.

I think I'm willing to take the "Baz Lurhmann" ride and let it be what it is.
Once I got over the news that Moulin Rouge! wasn't going to be a remake of the original film or an autobiographical account of Lautrec and his friends, I settled back and enjoyed a beautiful, incredible movie.
I'm willing to go in with an open mind on this one, too.

Speaking of Moulin Rouge, seeing the trailer for Gatsby before Les Mis made me wish that Baz would direct another movie musical, as well as another Broadway show. I adored his production of La Boheme some years back.

"I think I'm willing to take the "Baz Lurhmann" ride and let it be what it is."
And THAT was the "more intrigued" part--the film depicted in the trailer is so tangibly, so recognizably a Baz Lurhmann film and I am, quibble though I may, a deeply died Baz Lurhmann fan.
I'm definitely in. But I'm in with qualms.

Well at least this Luhrmann ride seems to be closer to his films that I enjoy (sometimes despite myself) then Australia...
I suppose for me, this isn't quite a Moulin Rouge, or even R&J case, simply because Romeo and Juliet I can accept at this point done any way conceivable, and MR was an original work (even if, by its nature, it was a pastiche). I'm prob too invested in my love for Gatsby--so I'm worried how much I will be able to sit back and see the movie for itself and not just compare it to my experience with the book (I suppose I could comnpare it to past versions of the film--like the Paul Rudd TV movie or the Redford one, in which case at the least it should be more exciting...)
