The Greatest Christmas CD...with one stipulation...

I want to buy a Christmas CD for the holidays.

Any suggestions for 'one' great CD?

There is one stipulation, however: IT MUST INCLUDE "CAROL OF THE BELLS." My favorite!
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Ok, I know I'm overlooking your one stipulation, but I would recommend The Chieftains' "Bells of Dublin." I'm not a big fan of Christmas CDs, or the holiday season in general, but I do enjoy this CD...good fun, and a bit of a switch from the traditional holiday fare!

the SOUTH PARK Xmas record I made with Trey Parker, "MR. HANKEY'S XMAS CLASSICS" is most definitely the greatest Christmas CD available...and has 'Mr. Garrison's' version of "Carol Of The Bells" to boot!!

I assure you, such modern classics as MR HANKEY THE CHRISTMAS POO, CHRISTMAS TIME IN HELL, DEAD DEAD DEAD, THE LONELY JEW ON CHRISTMAS, the ultimate arrangemnet of MY DREIDEL, and THE WORLD'S MOST OFFENSIVE SONG will brighten ANY Holiday season

The Carpenters AND The Osmond Family Christmas. No holiday is ever complete without the Osmonds!

BUT, if you want to be difficult with your damn bells, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir is just peachy.
"The stage is where I live and come alive and act out all the things that go on in my life. It's not just what I do for a living, it's my shrink and my love affair. No one in my life has ever or ever will kiss me on the mouth like this lover called my relationship with my performance."

Mr. Shaiman, you beat me to it. The minute i read that it had to include Carol of the Bells, I thought of South Park.

I'm rather fond of the Swiss Colony Beef Log song as well.

KMF - I knew I liked you for a reason! I love the Nancy Lamott CD - I gave it to several people for christmas one year - its the best blend of different styles of christmas tunes you'll ever hear - and her rendition of I'll be home for Christmas never fails to make me cry.
Second to that, I'd choose one or both of the available Julie Andrews Christmas collections - they are amazing also!
"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!" Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!

I shall always be partial to The Messiah, but then again, i'm a big fan of Baroque music... Besides that, my favorites are Vince Guaraldi's "A Charlie Brown Christmas" as well as The Roches "We Three Kings", Natalie Cole's "Holly & Ivy", and Loreena McKennitt's "To Drive The Cold Winter Away"...

Mr. Shaiman...

All the way down and All the way back from visiting my parents for Thanksgiving and Christmas, my brother plays that South Park Christmas Album. Mr. Hanky and the whole crew... This has been going on the last 3 years and this month it will happen again. It's a 15-hr drive one way...and we do it in one day...

I'm an Osmond, Carpenter, Mormon Tabernacle Choir fan, myself...
Those don't get air time...We hear South Park (and similar types of albums...) Oh no...I can even hear Mr. Hanky singing...

And, I am never able to hear "O Holy Night" without hearing the south park cast...

joey,

The Vince Guaraldi cd is my all-time favorite. Nothing captured the melancholy of Xmas.

Also, there is a CD called A CABARET CHRISTMAS that is quite wonderful.

Marc - My favorite version of Dreidel was with the three-part harmony at the benefit in Chicago. Do you know what happened with the DVD? I paid for one in advance and I was so looking forward to hearing that arrangement of Dreidel again (as well as Black Don't Crack). I'm gonna have to call Gentry, I guess.
