Love this new trailer. Benedict Cumberbatch sounds perfect for Smaug, exactly how I pictured Smaug Speaking. Could not be more excited for December.

Will it be explained why in the Lord of the Rings trilogy Legolas had brown eyes but now in the prequel he has blue eyes? Just curious.

Has anyone seen the new expanded edition on THE HOBBIT on Blu-Ray? Am thinking about buying it but am curious how much is added and if it is worth it.If they mark it down enough around Black Friday/Cyber Monday I may break and buy it. Just curious to hear some reviews if anyone here has purchased it.

I posted this in another thread:

So of course I watched the extended edition of The Hobbit last night. The extra 13 minutes are truly unecessary. Despite a few seconds of extended scenes here and there the majority of the extra material is in 3 scenes:

The prologue had about 3 minutes added to it. These were the best of the bunch. They add some backstory to the rift between the Dwarves and the Elves.

The Rivendell scene has been lengthened and now has the company of Dwarves going all "Animal House" at the feast and some shots of Bilbo walking around.

The Goblin Town scene now has about 4 extra minutes where the Goblin King sings the song from the book (♫"going down, down, down to Goblin Town..."♫)

There was one interesting bit that is also worth mentioning: during the council scene at Rivendell, Gandalf mentions that in addition to the One Ring, there is another missing ring. The 7th ring given to the Dwarf Lords has disappeared.
I don't remember reading about this and I'm not sure how it's going to come into play, but it was definitely a plot point that was stressed in the scene.

Oh, and Radagast on his bunny sleigh still looks superimposed and tacky.

So,like the first,this is shot in 48fps. What's the best format in seeing this? IMAX 3D or REAL 3D? Saw it last year and was blown away with how sharp and clear the picture was but can't remember which format I saw it in.

Though they do look more glaring in this movie, his eyes were also blue in LOTR. I think it's the guyliner he's wearing in The Hobbit that makes them pop more.

Orlando Bloom is the one actor that looks noticeably older in this than he did in LOTR, to me. Not enough to ruin the experience or anything, just a clear age difference between the two trilogies.

So ridiculously good.

I find it hard to deduct points for the things that are wrong, just because I walked out of the theater with my breath taken away by the overall experience. I enjoyed the heck out of An Unexpected Journey, but The Desolation of Smaug was just… I felt how I felt as a kid when I was in awe of something.

Saw it. Dug it. Still great fun, with the occasional bump here and there. The tone is significantly darker this time out, compared with the sunniness of AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY. For all the fuss about Smaug himself (and yeah, he's kind of astonishing) the most impressive moments in the film for me were those where Martin Freeman starts to realize that there's something up with that little Ring.

The good stuff is as good as anything out there, done as well as you'll ever see it done. The barrel chase is a model of Big Action Scene filmmaking, and SMAUG is the Dragon of Dragons -- we will not see that done better. Ever.

I saw it this weekend as well. I enjoyed it more than An Unexpected Journey, but there were a couple sections that still seemed like they were just being dragged out to fill more time; particularly several of the battle sequences.

However, the last third of the film - where the group reaches Laketown and then the mountain, all leading up to the point where Smaug is revealed - I thought that was all was fantastic. I loved everything about Smaug - his voice, the way he looked, everything.

can the dragon get an Academy Award.... holy jeebus that was one amazing effect, character etc... that voice was just PERFECT

I was supposed to go see this a couple of weeks ago, but I was not able to because I had to help my mom with some Secret Santa thing and everything got complicated. I just got back from seeing it and it was very good. I do think it was an improvement over the original film. The acting from Richard Armitage, Lee Pace, Evangeline Lily, and Orlando Bloom was absolutely fantastic. Everyone else gave very solid performances as well. I'm also glad I got to see it in IMAX 3D. I felt like I was in Middle Earth and Smaug looked so real.

So, I am reading about all the films coming out in 2015 and it appears that THE HOBBIT:THERE AND BACK AGAIN is scheduled for December 2015. Am I reading this wrong? Have they pushed the release date back? I can't imagine them doing that or at least it not being all over the web. I did a Google search & found nothing but Deadline Hollywood is a pretty good source.Here is the article. Am I reading this wrong?
