I figure we all can use a little good news- and the good news today is the Dog that Didn't Bark. It seems a California High School elected a gay couple Homecoming King & Queen (or Queen & Queen?). They won a write in campaign and rode arm & arm on the Homecoming float. There's an article about it in the Sacremento Bee- and the big news is that no one cares. No one protested, no one wants to require only heterosexual couples can run, no one even thinks it's weird. "Parent Lorna Bernard said she was taken aback by the news -- only because in her day, a gay couple stood to be harassed by their peers, not elected. But Raphael and Gatewood, she said, are "not just accepted, they're popular -- popular enough to be elected as homecoming princes."
And that, she said, is "really cool." "
Yes, it is.

"Celebrating a birthday this week: Rene Descartes is 412! Do you know who he is? Then why are you watching this show? You could probably get into college and even get one of those job things. As for the rest of us; Amanda Bynes is 22! Yay!"

Posted: 10/26/07 at 10:52pmGood for them, good for the school, good for the community. I'd love to believe that our local HS would be so accepting, but I know we're not there yet (I think many of the kids are, but I know few of the parents are).

"I think many of the kids are, but I know few of the parents are"
I think that's disturbingly true.
I have a friend that's fond of saying, "Every day, another old bigot dies." While somewhat morbid and cynical, I think there's truth in the fact that the old mores ARE dying off - just not quick enough for my taste.
But how wonderful that younger people DO seem to be embracing plurality more and more. SOUTH PACIFIC showed us that you have to be carefully taught - so there's extreme validity in getting this type of thing out in public - to teach.

Because I totally mis-read that thread.
I need to wake up before I post.
I'm thrilled that this has happened.

Posted: 10/27/07 at 4:38pmKudos to the students at Davis, the school administration, community and especially to Brandon and Kiernan for going for it. I loved when they said they didn't do it to make a political statement. They just wanted to win...like everybody else. So sweet.

That wasn't what I meant at all. I meant finally people are accepting things without automatically shutting it out.
Basically, people are learning.

And I love that.
And the fact that they are both 'Prince'.
Make them both Kings!!!!!!!!!!
