Saw the flick last night at the Angelika. Anyone else seen it yet? I wanna discuss.
I just saw it...what would you like to talk about? The really predictable ending? The good acting?
It was a wonderful film with Oscar quality work from Rufus and Norton.
I wonder why Scarlett was not in the film? Jessica was good but she is not quite b/o.
I recommend it.

Scarlett is in the OTHER magician movie coming out Oct. 20 - The Prestige, starring Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Michael Caine, directed by Christopher Nolan.
I'm looking forward to that one more than I was The Illusionist -- though I do like Norton as an actor a lot...

BIG SPOILERS
I thought the acting was spectacular, but the plot annoyed the hell out of me. Did you think for one second that she was really dead? I knew as soon as she rode by on the horse that it was fake. I don't really care for movies that are so predictable. They should have thrown us something crazy in there. Either that or the big realization at the end was not needed. I think it would have been better if they had shown him on the train and then going to her and ending it there. That would have left you with something to talk about after the film. I don't know. So many people told me it was a must-see. I thought it was okay.
The ending totally surprised the audience and I. If anything there should have been some indications of what was going on so it was not so much of an avalanche of surprise.
I did like the Orange Tree ending.
SPOILER ALERT
I agree - as soon as they didn't show the murder and saw her on the horse I thought "she's not dead, they planned the whole thing." I was hoping for a bigger "twist" than that too.
Wait, the ending surprised you? You didn't recognize the doctor? The line "as long as we are alive he will hunt us" pretty much gave it all away. When they found the jewel on her body my first thought was that Eisenheim had taken the jewels off the sword when he did the trick with it. I don't know how anyone was fooled by it.
I liked the movie, and I thought Norton and Sewell were very strong, but I have to agree that the ending was predictable. Oddly enough, it was Jessica Biel who surprised me the most. She was solid in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but I thought she was luminous here.

I loved this movie. A clear example of how you can take a mediocre script and turn it into something excellent.
