I love him. I love his films. I don't care what anyone says - his films can be crude, trashy and just plain gross, but he is one of the most original film makers of all time.

HIS COMMENTARIES ARE DIVINE (pun intended)! I've listened to them all FAR too many times, though I'm sad I can't track down the ones he did for the laserdiscs (particularly POLYESTER).
I recently went through an OBSESSION with his stuff... if you are a fan you MUST read SHOCK VALUE and CRACKPOT. I think he may be an even better columnist/humorist than he is as a writer/director!
FEMALE TROUBLE, POLYESTER and DESPERATE LIVING will always be my favorites, IN THAT ORDER.
But, damn, if SERIAL MOM isn't the most fun imaginable... and the best unmade musical.
Best movie line EVER, from POLYESTER: "I'm getting an abortion - and I can't wait!"

I'm glad he now owns up to cringing when he looks back on his lighthearted movie dedications to members of the Manson family in this excellent new Huffington Post series. I'll probably look back on my reenacting the two nights of Family infamy in the Starshines thread around midnight Saturday with the same sense of shame. But probably not.
Also, he's the star of my single favorite Simpsons episode of all time.

I "met" him (if you wanted to call it that) during intermission at August Osage County in January 2008. I suddenly grew a set, walked up to him and said "i'm a huge Hairspray and Serial Mom fan," to which he said "thank you very much" and smiled. I immediately hightailed it back to my seat and called my partner.
I was surprised at how tall he was.

I was just discussing that Leslie van Houten article with a friend before coming on the board.
I'm a huge John Waters fan, and in appropriately bad taste, my mother introduced his films to me at an early age. I love every one of his movies.

Posted: 8/5/09 at 11:35pmThe Van Houten pieces that have run thus far are very sensitively written. Which is not what the casual observer might expect from John Waters.

Namo - have you read any of his books? CRACKPOT and SHOCK VALUE are wonderfully written and arguably more entertaining than many of his films, and that is saying a lot!
CRACKPOT has all his IFC Independant Spirit Awards monologues as well which are truly some of the funniest jokes and jabs at the biz I've ever read.

Female Trouble and Hairspray are masterpieces, imo. Serial Mom is my next favorite.

For 3 years I worked at the video store featured in Serial Mom (where the character Chip works) and John still comes in occasionally. He's a big supporter of the store and we have greatly appreciated the free publicity he's given us. On the Serial Mom Director's Commentary track of the new edition DVD he plugs it.
Needless to say I'm also a huge John Waters fan and as a Baltimore native have gotten to meet him at book signings and a CD signing for his Christmas CD. He also picks and hosts a movie at the Maryland Film Festival every year and I've been to two of the screenings he's hosted. He's a great guy.
I really hope his next film Fruitcake can get made!

I must learn to read thread titles carefully. I almost thought this one was about John Hughes as well, and I couldn't figure out why his movies were not being discussed. LOL!
Anyway, from John WATERS movies, I liked Hairspray. It was so quirky and weird. I've seen Serial Mom as well. I probably wasn't supposed to when I saw it too.

wow, if you thought Hairspray was quirky and weird, then keep away from his pre-Hollywood films!
#21re: The John Waters Love Thread
Posted: 8/6/09 at 11:40pmActually I think Hairspray is one of my least favorites.

Posted: 8/15/09 at 10:28amLast I heard financing fell through with Fruitcake. I really had hoped this would come out for Christmas. Last film I heard John Waters was attached to was a film called White Lipstick.I had heard this was going to be the title of a sequel to Hairspray, but am not sure if that is true. One thing I think we all can agree on,John needs to get to work and get a new film out!
