Really? See I didn't like the Lion King on Broadway nearly as much as I thought I would. For Mermaid I am glad they are still using Menken, and I dunno... I see what you mean about it being sort of like a machine, but I think that's just partly the nature of Disney. So many people complained about Aida butchering Verdi's opera, but we liked it, you know?
Who knows - we'll see when it comes out.
I am wondering if this whole Rent thing is true, if they are actually starting on July 30th. Because I'd love to buy tix for their opening show
I feel like there'll be a press release on Playbill or something pretty soon.
I think The Lion King is problematic when you're not a child because it's identical to the movie, plot-wise, but what I mean about its artistic merit is that Taymor found a way to make it absolutely beautiful to look at, and translated cartoon animals to stage without being campy. And, well, I mean, look at Tarzan -- many people on the creative team also did AIDA, so I expected it to be just as gorgeous, visually, but it's... kinda not. AIDA is sort of a different animal in terms of adaptations though, because it is so radically different from the source material, whereas everything else is an adaptation of a film. I just think that of all things to put on a Broadway stage, The Little Mermaid was a silly choice. It's gonna look ridiculous, but that's just my two cents.

Right, I see what you're saying. That was my thought too when I first heard about it, I was like "no, they're going to butcher it!" and they very well may do so. who knows. I'm going into it with a similar attitude as you tho, but part of me loves the show so much that I can't contain myself. Only time will tell.
Arent they also making Shrek into a musical? I heard casting rumors. Has the target broadway age gone down to under 12 or something? I mean I know that I'm exaggerating but...
Yeah, they are. Apparently it has a really great team of people attached, which baffles me.
Well, this will make for a great birthday present!
While I'm glad I'll most likely to get see them, it still baffles me a little.

hey, you never know what happened after that Under Pressure performance
NO ONE should be writing lyrics for The Little Mermaid but Howard Ashman. And considering the absolute mess Tarzan turned out to be, I don't have high hopes for ANY future Disney venture on Broadway, let alone my absolute favorite movie of all time (SEE THE AVATAR).
In other news, I will be whoring myself out on the streets of NYC for Rent money this August.
I can't even start to imagen the 'cheese' filled lyrics that can be written for The Little Mermaid the Musical.
Yes, I forgot to mention that, too; I don't think anyone should be writing new lyrics. I would say we don't need new songs, but it's just purism.
Oh my God, I am so, so sick. I haven't had a fever in the longest time. I forgot how much it sucks.
I hope you're able to spend the day in bed, it's the quickest way to get over it.
Regardless of all the pros and cons one could go into, I'm really excited to see Rent this August. Thanks to a certain someone who called me late last night, I already have a ticket for their first performance.
I'm supposed to write a paper. I'm going to the doctor in a few hours... and then getting right back into bed.
Ok, I just read through what's been said in this thread the past few days, so I'm a little late on this news...but can I just express my INSANE amount of excitement that they may be reviving the revival of Cabaret?! OMG That's amazing! AND Anthony and Adam are returning to Rent! Talk about crazy Broadway news!! I'm so excited about this! :)
I encourage Adam Pascal fans to join our mailing list (www.landmarkonmainstreet.org). He's going to perform at Landmark on Main Street's e-mail list so you can keep up to date when tickets go on sale for Adam Pascal's January 11, 2008 concert at our 425-seat venue.
(As an aside, we have a discount code for broadwayworld fans for this Saturday night's Marin Mazzie & Jason Danieley concert. Please use "BROADWAYWORLD" for your $5 discount through our box office at 516-767-6444 or online).
I got my tickets!!! Can't do opening night since it is a Monday, but I got tickets more towards the end of the run, right by my birthday!
I saw RENT for the first time for my 16th birthday how many years ago, so it seems fitting!
How exciting Tink!!! I wish I could go, but:
#1) I'm going to New York City in June
#2) My mom would not let me see Rent anyway. She thinks it's the same thing as the movie and she says I should try to see things that I haven't already seen.

that sucks. I'd ignore my mom if she did that, but thats because I'm a mean, ungrateful daughter.
But you are going to have fun in NYC anyway!
our internet and phone has been down since like 6 am so I snuck to my neighbors house and ordered a ticket for the 30th on her laptop. I have no shame

Um, Adam (or someone who is involved with maintaing his page) apparently just deleted his blog entry. I'm going to literally cry if this isn't 100% official or it somehow just fell through - not because I wouldn't be able to see them, but because I've already spent a considerable amount of money on this! Eek.
I fully agree!!!!!!! I will get very upset!

I've... bought three tickets. Impulsive, I know, but I figured that I might as well be impulsive and get good seats. I'm assuming someone contacted Adam or his management and said the Rent producers didn't want it announced before an official press release, but I can't help but be a bit nervous.
I am still betting it is true. Maybe the Rent people wanted a bit more official of announcement? I don't know if I would want it stuck into a MySpace blog post as a p.s./'by the way' as it was.
I've been meaning to go back beforehand, but I probably wouldn't have spent as much if there wasn't the Adam tease!
Maybe he wasn't supposed to have said anything until an official announcement?
ETA: Didn't see that Lexi had already said that! Now I'm nervous. I was gonna have my mom buy me tickets later. Hmm.

That's what I'm thinking as well, matjomae. I'm surprised that the Rent producers didn't tell Anthony to stop discussing it at his book signings (hasn't he signed that book enough by now? heh!).

siamese, I think the fact that both of them have let the information slip is even more of an indication that this is indeed happening. I really can't see any reason why it would fall through now.
And who knows, maybe it was an intentional slip on Adam's blog to get the buzz and excitment up?
