For a long time I did not want there to be a Rent movie just for that reason. I didn't want it to be a mockery of the stage version. If Justin and Beyonce and people like that had been in the movie, I honestly would have debated going to see it.
I think Spike Lee probably would've made a much darker, dirtier movie. BUT, if his casting was so ridiculous...
What I don't understand is why he went so far with Justin, if he was also looking at people like Raúl, Orfeh and Audra. They're serious actors. He's not.
Granted, I think I would've had a serious problem with someone with no Broadway ties playing Roger, even if it weren't Adam.
I used to say things like... that I didn't know whose right it was to mess with Jonathan's work; but do any of us know what he would want?

Maybe he figured that if he casted big names, the movie would be more likely to get made. But casting people like that turns me off of movies. I'm less likely to go see a movie if it has Beyonce in it.
Do any of us know what he would want?
No, but, if Spike Lee had directed the movie with people like Justin and Beyonce, etc., regardless of how hard they worked on it, I would feel like it was some sort of betrayal or mockery of Jonathan's vision. It's just not the same.
So would I. I feel like it would be selling out, or something. I'm still caught up on how he could have such opposing casting decisions: Raúl and then JT? eek.
I've seen Spike Lee, Baz Luhrmann, Rob Marshall, Sam Mendes and Martin Scorcese all discussed. Spike Lee has his own very pointed agenda in all his films. He might have made an interesting movie, but there probably wouldn't have been much of Rent in it. Baz Luhrmann's style is so over the top that all his characters feel like puppets, not people. His films are fun but have little emotional connection of the kind that Rent demands. Rob Marshall would have been somewhat the same, I feel, in a less pronounced way. He's style over substance too. I have a lot of respect for Sam Mendes, but his emotional temperament is the polar opposite of Larson's. His best subject is probably alienation, not connection. Martin Scorcese seems like the only real possibility, and apparently he came to the conclusion that he couldn't find a way to do it. Aside from that, spectacle seems to be overtaking emotion in his work, and it has some of the same chilly remoteness as Mendes'.
Sorry to go into all this detail, but I work in film and have thought about it a lot.

Ugh. I shudder to think of Rent with Justin in it.
Katt, don't submit it. It's not really a secret, it's just an inside joke. And after last week's, this thread doesn't need anymore attention
And on this note, I'm going to go bash some meat for dinner.

Yeah, it probably doesn't, lol. I don't think I'm going to submit it.
I think Luhrman's work is FAR too cartoony. It doesn't work for something so realistic as Rent. I don't really know how to describe the way I feel about Scorcese's work, but it's sort of... heavy. Maybe over-dramatized? I tend to associate him with Gangs of New York which... probably wasn't his best work, I guess. I think Marshall might have made some odd choices, given his re-imagination with Chicago, but I guess I'm putting him up to be a one-trick pony by saying that. I love Sam Mendes.
Sam Mendes is brilliant, no doubt about it, but as I said, probably would not have been as nearly in tune with the emotion in the show. Sweeney Todd, on the other hand, seems perfect for him and I'm sorry that he apparently won't be doing it now.
I would be so devastated if those big celebrities were in RENT. It would destroy the message and totally ruin it for me.
I'm scared, my whole family is screaming at the TV.
If those people were in rENT I would not watch it.

ditto everybody who said they'd probably not see the movie if Justin Timberlake/others like him were in it. Bringing that kind of mass-produced talent (even to a popular show like RENT) would have just killed it for me.
Justin replacing Adam? ew
All right, I just read the past few pages. A book written by Adam? That would be absolutly amazing!
I'm still slightly astonished by the idea that Spike Lee wanted Justin Timberlake to play Roger. I just can't see the thought process behind that.
Not that any of us can actually see him writing a book, though, right? But as I've mentioned before, I have a fantasy about interviewing him extensively and asking all the questions I wonder about - what his childhood was like, how he came to love music so much and how his feelings about it might have changed, how he feels about women, what some of those more obscure songs on MP mean - I could go on and on.
It's called $$.
The voice doesn't match, the look doesn't match. I just don't understand....
Silly girls - he is MARRIED to a writer. Why didn't we think of that angle?!!? :)
If Justin Timberlake played Roger, I probably would have cried. You can't have some pop star voice in that part. It just doesn't work!
And if Spike Lee wanted to draw people in by casting a celebrity, he could have easily done it with a character who wasn't as central to the story, like, I don't know, Usher as Benny or something.

I tried to imagine Justin Timberlake's voice in "One Song Glory." It made me physically cringe and recoil. :P
By the way, I liked the RENT movie as it was. Well, I won't deny that there were many flaws, a lot of parts/elements that I disliked, but as a whole, I enjoyed it and can't wait for the DVD. :)
