Heh, I just remembered, Tim had this habit of pulling up his shirt sleeve, to show his track marks I guess. He did it during the line "your own blood cells betray", during Light My Candle, and a few other times.
Matt tried to make Tango Maureen very goofy, and while the audience found it funny, maybe I'm just too annoyed by Matt to find anything he does funny.

The interesting thing - which probably contributes to WHY Matt continues to play Mark the way he does, aside from boredom - is that he does get the laughs. He usually gets close to all the laughs of the show. However, I just can't accept that the way in which Matt plays Mark is the way thousands of first time Rent viewers think the character is and *should* be.

Sadly, I can't remember anything about the Mark I saw in the tour. I don't know why, it wasn't even two years ago, which is kind of scary that I can't remember, so I can't really compare the two.
But another thing that annoys me is that Matt plays Mark as a pervert, which I don't think fits in with his character at all.

I'm going to be in NYC at the end of April and I'm so looking forward to seeing Rent, but at this point I'm really disappointed Matt's still going to be there. I haven't liked what I've seen of him so far and that was when he was still enthusiastic over the role. Why oh why did he extend his contract? *sigh*

Katt, what was the month/year that you saw the tour last?
I just yoinked the most awesome thing from the library...the issue of Newsweek from '96 with Adam and Daph on the cover! I was in the back room and saw that they were throwing out magazines...and I saw a box full of issues of Newsweek, and I dug through it and found it. It's so perfect and pretty.

November 2004. I have the playbill, but I don't want to go find it. Dan was Roger, Ava was Maureen, D'Monroe was Benny.
I do remember Dan's performance though. I like Tim better.
And Adam is pretty on the Newsweek cover. :)
That is awesome Mandi! The libraries in my area all toss out their magazines after a year, but I guess in this case, being a packrat pays off!
That's so awesome, Mandi! Nice find.
Hope you feel better, skittles!.... the puppies are still very adorable.
I'd like to see Rent in NYC sometime...
What a great find! That's awesome.

Oh, the Mark was Andy Meeks. I'm trying to remember more about his performance. Did anyone else see him and Dan? If so, what did yall think?
I was so happy when I saw it. I had to dig pretty deep, and people probably thought that I was insane...but I don't care.
I've heard that Andy and Dan were pretty good, but I haven't heard anything from them.

Okay, this sounds so corny but I felt like in a way, the magic is gone from Rent for me. I should have been so excited to actually see it in the Nederlander, because I've wanted to for so long, but it just wasn't that big of a deal, which is so weird. I waited for so long to see the tour cast, and I counted down the days to the movie and everything, but I just wasn't as excited about this. I mean, I was excited that I was actually at the Nederlander, but I wasn't anticipating it like I have with other things Rent. Maybe I've just been on a Rent overload since this fall with the movie and everything.
Actually, watching the play made me sad in a way. I've already said this, but during Glory it made me think about how the movie was supposed to expand upon the things that we did not see, and now we never will see, like April's suicide.
I've thought about that, Katt. Like, sometimes I get upset about the fact that the movie was our chance to see some things that aren't in the play, and now we never will.

I know I've ranted about it before, but actually seeing it onstage again just made the feeling come back in full force. The movie was supposed to show what we couldn't see. That was supposed to be the point of it. In a perfect movie I guess we would have seen April's suicide, and maybe alluded more to the relationships with their parents, or show Mimi leaving home when she was fifteen. So many things. I really do like the movie, but thinking about it lately is making me a little sad.

I understand how you feel, Katt, and I think all of us have our issues with the movie, but I don't know how much more could have been incorporated without making it really long. And 2:10 is already quite long from a purely commercial standpoint.
By the way, I agree the lighting was weird at that press junket. Look at Anthony.
He looks a little grey.

Well, April's suicide would have taken like 10 seconds if incorporated into Glory, but yeah, I know. I just wish that the movie had been different I suppose.

Maybe watching this will make me feel better about Matt and the cast's lackluster performace.

I think all the pictures there are strangely gray.
I would have LOVED for the flashbacks to have more, including the suicide and the rumored sex scene. I thought about the possibility of going to flashback before the song starts, maybe cutting to a close-up of Roger after he puts aside the guitar and going to the club, allowing them to include some of what he was singing there. But then what? It would be awkward to go back and get Roger up to the roof, and weird to go back into flashbacks during the song, especially since the club scenes fit so well where they are now.
So how about restructuring the flashbacks? Do we go from Roger and April talking to them in bed? That might make their attraction too much about sex and not enough about love, which is so important. I can't see dropping any of the shots that are in now. Even the drug buy is important for how it's echoed later with Mimi. So do we include the sex scene and bathtub scene and see less of Roger singing? That probably felt too "crowded," as Columbus said. It feels vital to see him doing that whole last part of the song.
These kind of problems are made much more difficult by having to edit within the tight structure of a song. With dialog, the editor can easily lengthen or shorten the pacing, but not so within a song. You can see that with the awkward extra measures in Goodbye Love to get Mimi from the stairwell to her window.
I still would have liked to see some things different, as we've all discussed in the past, but when I think about the practical difficulties in making certain changes, I can see why Columbus made a lot of the decisions he did.

Ugh, I don't know. I wish the movie is different, but also have no way as to HOW it could be different.
Anyway, I <3 the pressreels. Although I wish Christmas Bells was in there. Watching this again is making me notice the little things, like how Daphne puts her finger along her arm and hits it to parallel drug use in Out Tonight, and how Adam makes this kissing face at Jesse during Today 4 U, and how in Take Me or Leave Me, Fredi is closing her eyes, as if counting to ten so that she doesn't kill Maureen, and also Anthony attempting to drum along to the beat during Today 4 U. I never really noticed some of these things before.
Yeah, I remember Daphne doing that, I think it's great, also Fredi closing her eyes. Don't remember an Adam kissing face though.

Sorry for the dumb question, but would track marks still be there after not using for at least six months? I guess maybe it's some sort of signal to the audience how he acquired HIV on the "your own blood cells betray" line... ?
