to be cheesy, got to my heart, and gave me beautiful music.... and many beautiful memories, too!
Exactly! I wasn't trying to claim that I wasn't emotionally affected by the show; I think it's almost impossible to be completely stone-hearted when it comes to certain aspects of it. I just don't find myself truly living the "no day but today" philosophy now that I've become a Rent fan. However, while the show itself may not have had some huge emotional impact on me, I would likely not have found my way onto BWW, discovered Adam's other music, etc. if not for Rent. I think the way you put it is best -- I was affected and impacted by the show in other ways that the show might not specifically offer, not exactly changed because of it.

Same Lexi. I never would have come here had it not been for Rent, and also wouldn't have become interested in Adam, Idina, Anthony, etc.

There's all the tangential stuff, too, Lexi. I mean, the friends I've made, for example. In a way separate from the story and the show itself, a lot of what has happened a result of being a Rent fan has *absolutely* profoundly changed a lot of things about my life. Not my philosophy and things like that, but like... who I am. Who I spend my time with, and what I want to do.

Also, you have to think that all Rent fans have to start *somewhere*. It's just the way some people go about it that is the problem.
I recognize the addiction to being alive.

Exactly. I wouldn't be here today. I wouldn't be listening to Civillian right now. RENT was the first show I saw on broadway that really made me enjoy theatre.
I have nothing against new fans, it's just the additude that comes with most of them.

I wouldn't.... okay, there are a lot of things I wouldn't have done.
Dumb ones and important ones.

Last year, I had an arguement with a friend who insisted that Jonathan's death occured on opening night on Broadway. "I did a research paper on him! I know I'm right!" I was like, "Well, your research came from a sh*tty place, then." (By the way, I hadn't even heard of Rent when the papers were written... I was in my Moulin Rouge period at that point, and did my paper on Jacques Offenbach, because he wrote the Can-Can
)
Rent definitely changed my life in that it sort of renewed my interest in musical theatre, indirectly... Rent led to Adam, which led to BWW, which led to a renewed interest in musical theatre, hehe.

Exactly. "Tangential stuff" is the best term I've heard for that in a long time! The actual show itself may have not changed my personal beliefs, but the people surrounding it, both performers and fans, definitely have impacted my life.
On a completely separate note: For as much as I condemn IMDB, there are some nice posts there at times. This is from Adam's board and I thought I'd share it with the thread:
yeppers, i first met him years ago, i was ten, and now, being sixteen, i can say he's been around for a while. my dad had been part of the broadway musical Aida since its entire run (he began as keyboardist and eventually became conductor for its last two and a half years.)
lets set the record straight, Adam is just as kind and warm hearted as he seems. his smile is infectious. he is one of those people who wants to know you, he'll shake your hand and really listen to what you're saying. he loves kids, and shortbread cookies (don't ask) and will always have something funny to say. oh, and he's even more gorgeous in person. hahaha
to be completely honest, its strange seeing him on movie posters and on television... can't seem to grasp the fact that its him, it all seems so glorified.
i remember not long ago, the last things he said to me (it was my last time at Aida before its final performance) he hugged me, and said "bye sweety." and a few seconds later he added "i'll see you soon." Oh man, did i cry!!
anyways, that whole rant was to let you know YES i know him, and if there's anybody in this world whose worth anyone's time and admiration, Adam is certainly that person.

I think the problem is in thinking that because you believe a show or performer is special, that makes you special too. When it becomes more about the fans than the show, in other words.

I also can't believe the dumb questions I continually get asked, or the dumb comments I hear about Rent. I got asked twice from two different intelligent people last Wednesday: "Oh you saw Rent in NYC? Was the OBC still there?"
Or when I was actually AT the theater sitting next to a guy that said "Wow, this place needs a new ceiling, I'm glad im not here when it rains!" "Look at that scaffolding, they must be renovating. I guess they are waiting until they get more money. This show has probably only been running for two years, it must not have made that much yet!"
And heh, Adam likes to call people Sweetie apparently. :P

I think a lot of what it's done for me personally is in the consequences and results that it's lead to in my every day life, Lexi.
I like that post. I don't think I know him the way the poster does, but I feel much the same way. And I miss him like crazy.

I hate when people who are movie fans say that the show won't be the same because the OBC won't be there.

Rent led to Adam, which led to BWW, which led to a renewed interest in musical theatre, hehe.
That's about the same effect it's had for me. I found this site while doing searches for the Rent movie. I'm never quite sure where to place myself in the spectrum of Rent fans. I've been a fan of it since I was twelve, but I'm certainly not a person who would camp out for the show for any reason, which is why you're certainly not going to find me outside of the Nederlander in a tent this April.

Honestly, I kind of agree with that. As cheesy as it sounds, the OBC obviously had something special that can't be truly imitated. I saw the stage show (albeit only once) and I enjoyed it, but I would have KILLED to have seen it with the OBC. It doesn't mean you shouldn't see the show, but on the other hand, it ISN'T the same.
Atrias, despite conflicting opinions as to whether we'd camp out for something, I think everyone agrees that camping out for the freaking LOTTO is a bit insane.
I replied to the IMDB girl. I just thought that was such a cute story!

Mine is the reply after her post (obviously). I'm sure she'd be interested in hearing about your many experiences.

People might camp out for the lotto to try to relive their experience from the Rent line ten years ago. I'm sure there will be some people camping out or showing up hours early.

Em, haven't you told him your name multiple times? Maybe you should make him a card with your name and picture on it so that he can remember the name that goes with the face.

Nope, he's only heard it once.
I e-mailed him the photo from Symphony Space and signed the e-mail (plus my name is on the "sender" tag), but who knows if he'll see it before like... 2008?
I think I'll probably just have to suck it up and be like "I don't think I've ever properly introduced myself..."
