The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part seven

I heard somewhere that the line for Daphne's last started 3 days before her last show.

As a fan, I can't imagine having so much emotional attachment to any show that would prompt me to camp out for days for tickets. I like Rent quite a bit, but I could never imagine being that devoted to a specific show.

Obviously it's all hypothetical, but as much as I love Adam, I do not love him enough to camp out. To wake up very early, yes. To camp out, no.

I would've just bought tickets in advance.

Lexi, I can't really imagine doing it myself, but I guess it was kind of a 'go with the flow' type of thing. At that point, there were the 'line regulars' who were all friends and knew the cast and who had been following Rent since the beginning. And to be a part of Daphne's last show, not only because of Daphne, but also because she was the first one to leave, must have been a pretty amazing thing.

Well, these people had probably spent so much money seeing Rent 1,000 plus OTHER times that they couldn't afford that, Mel.

It probably was a lot of fun for all the people who knew eachother. My mom would NEVER in a million years have let me camp out like that.

I think it wasn't just about the show. Obviously, I can't speak from experience, but they made friends while camped out there, and from what one of the links I posted said, they would go over there just to hang out with the people there, and the theater was like a second home to them.

I'm sure they were devastated when the producers decided to get rid of the line and started the lottery instead.

People were already sleeping on the streets for rush tickets, so it wasn't a matter of "Would you do it?" if they already had done it multiple times.

And Mel, it's not just about seeing her last show, it's about getting to see the last show from the front row. It's a weird distinction that probably doesn't make sense now, but back then, the line meant a lot more to people than just $20 rush tickets.

I definitely would have camped out for something like that. It would have been an amazing show to witness.

Katt, I think they stopped the line somewhere around the time of Idina's last.

It must've have been such an amazing experience.

I guess..I mean I can't know, but I think I would've wanted to make sure that I had tickets. I don't think I'd really care if I sat in the first two rows but I guess I can't really say anything since I wasn't there back then.

As much as I hate hearing stuff from the elitist 'original rentheads', it's one of those things that we really can't pretend we know what it was like. It really was such a special and unique, and probably in some or most cases, a life altering experience. To even attempt to think about it, you could probably imagine it like the bond we have here, but times 100.

And Mel, most of the people who waited in line waited in line for a reason, they were poor college students.

That's kind of what I meant, though -- I can't imagine following a show from the beginning, going to 1,000+ performances, and everything the original Rentheads did. I remember reading a short article in my Playbill the first time I saw Rent that talked a bit about the original Rentheads, and I thought that they must have been out of their minds, but at least the show was probably bound to be good considering the behavior it prompted in so many fans. Even after I've immersed myself in the Rent fandom, so to speak, I still can't see myself doing it. I've seen it on Broadway once and the movie maybe ten times by now and I'm a bit tired of it all. I still love the music, but watching/listening to something over and over tends to lessen the emotional impact for me. I can only imagine seeing the show over a THOUSAND times.

That's what I was thinking when I was at the theater, and I think Em said this once. We can say that we are Rentheads or whatever, but it was a term coined for a time that doesn't exist anymore.

Yeah, exactly, Fantab... like, right now I'm so sick of the elitism and whatnot, plus the fact that I think I've only ever met/talked to ONE original Renthead that I actually like, so when I hear about this stuff, all I can think of is how pretentious and psychotic I think a lot of the stuff is/was. But I know that I'd kill for that kind of experience.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I feel weird calling myself a renthead, because I really am a "new" fan. I only saw it for the first time a year ago.

It's also hard because while Rent has been a *huge* part of my life, it wasn't even possible for me to have been an original renthead - I was 9.

That also makes it much harder when those elitist fans come along and say I'm not worthy of being a 'renthead' - which by the way, I completely agree with Katt about. It's not a term that really exists any more in the way it was intended to be used. Now it's just thrown around. But, while I'm not a 'renthead', I still consider myself a huge fan, and I hate when people try to denounce my love *because* I was 9 in 1996.

I've never called myself a Renthead and frankly, I don't like it when others do unless they're imitating the original Rentheads' actions to some extent (i.e. going to the show nearly every night -- which doesn't seem to happen much, if at all, anymore) or are truly extreme fans of the show in some way. I cringe every time I see someone make a post on LiveJournal stating, "Hi fellow Rentheads! I just loved the movie and OMG I love Anthony Rapp so much! I've seen the movie five times since I bought the DVD!" I have nothing against movie fans other than many of them seem to lack proper grammar and spelling, but please, don't call yourself a Renthead. I know I sure as hell don't call myself one.

Oh yeah, I'll readily admit that PART of my "wow, y'all were such freaks!" is jealousy.

Heh, I'm jealous of them too, not just because they experienced so many great moments, but just because it seems like it was amazing to have been there. Although:

A) I'm too young to have been a part of that
B) I don't live in NY
C) I would have not been allowed by my parents to do that. Even if I was in college they probably wouldn't have allowed it. Updated On: 3/5/06 at 03:16 PM

There was no way that I could have been an original renthead, I was 5. My mom wouldn't let me see the show until last year. I wanted to see it when I was 10 after hearing the title song. She told me it was too adult for me, which it probably was at 10. I am a little jelous of people who have known the show for so long because it's such a wonderful part of my life, and I'm greatful that I got to know it before the movie came out.

I don't like being called one, I guess, because it's become kind of derogatory DUE to the insanity. I have Renthead tendencies, thank you.

But I also don't like being put at fault, or whatever, because I was ten. Like, it's not my FAULT. I know the experience was different, but just because you're ten plus years older than me doesn't mean I can't love it too.

Anthony is the ONLY person I let poke fun at me for it.

I think I was with Liotte, and she was saying how she saw the OBC like 27 times, or something, and she slept on the street and whtanot. I got embarassed for my age, and Anthony was like "sorrrrryyyy, you HAD to sleep on the street!"

I have Renthead tendencies, thank you.

I hope I didn't sound overly hostile. Like I said, I think there are exceptions to the rule and some people definitely are extreme fans of the show and/or at least somewhat follow in the footsteps of the original Rentheads. However, seeing fourteen-year-old girls proclaiming themselves "Rentheads" because they absolutely loved the movie personally irritates me. I'd never call them out on it because, after all, it's a subjective matter and I'm probably one of the few people neurotic enough to let it bother me, but it does make me cringe a bit.
