I'm sure they were devastated when the producers decided to get rid of the line and started the lottery instead.

And Mel, it's not just about seeing her last show, it's about getting to see the last show from the front row. It's a weird distinction that probably doesn't make sense now, but back then, the line meant a lot more to people than just $20 rush tickets.
I definitely would have camped out for something like that. It would have been an amazing show to witness.
Katt, I think they stopped the line somewhere around the time of Idina's last.

I guess..I mean I can't know, but I think I would've wanted to make sure that I had tickets. I don't think I'd really care if I sat in the first two rows but I guess I can't really say anything since I wasn't there back then.

And Mel, most of the people who waited in line waited in line for a reason, they were poor college students.

That's kind of what I meant, though -- I can't imagine following a show from the beginning, going to 1,000+ performances, and everything the original Rentheads did. I remember reading a short article in my Playbill the first time I saw Rent that talked a bit about the original Rentheads, and I thought that they must have been out of their minds, but at least the show was probably bound to be good considering the behavior it prompted in so many fans. Even after I've immersed myself in the Rent fandom, so to speak, I still can't see myself doing it. I've seen it on Broadway once and the movie maybe ten times by now and I'm a bit tired of it all. I still love the music, but watching/listening to something over and over tends to lessen the emotional impact for me. I can only imagine seeing the show over a THOUSAND times.

"But I know that I'd kill for that kind of experience."
Same..I can't even imagine what it had to have been like.

That also makes it much harder when those elitist fans come along and say I'm not worthy of being a 'renthead' - which by the way, I completely agree with Katt about. It's not a term that really exists any more in the way it was intended to be used. Now it's just thrown around. But, while I'm not a 'renthead', I still consider myself a huge fan, and I hate when people try to denounce my love *because* I was 9 in 1996.

A) I'm too young to have been a part of that
B) I don't live in NY
C) I would have not been allowed by my parents to do that. Even if I was in college they probably wouldn't have allowed it.

But I also don't like being put at fault, or whatever, because I was ten. Like, it's not my FAULT. I know the experience was different, but just because you're ten plus years older than me doesn't mean I can't love it too.
Anthony is the ONLY person I let poke fun at me for it.

I hope I didn't sound overly hostile. Like I said, I think there are exceptions to the rule and some people definitely are extreme fans of the show and/or at least somewhat follow in the footsteps of the original Rentheads. However, seeing fourteen-year-old girls proclaiming themselves "Rentheads" because they absolutely loved the movie personally irritates me. I'd never call them out on it because, after all, it's a subjective matter and I'm probably one of the few people neurotic enough to let it bother me, but it does make me cringe a bit.
