Well now I must wear you like some torn up wedding gown
Who else thought of Taboo?
Interesting interpretation, Lexi. I sort of viewed it as a man who felt as though he had to be something he wasn't in order to please a woman he thought he loved, and in the end neither one of them was happy. I think I'm getting a lot of that from the "all the while I seem to love it" line, but then again I was never really good at interpreting poetry when we had to do it in English class.
Bye, Lexi. I agree, Em, though it's occurred to me that some of that edginess could be an attitude they felt they *should* take, rather than what they were really feeling.
BG, that's good. I think both you and Lexi are right. I guess what puzzles me most is the "I'm closer to divine" part.
I used to be good at analyzing poetry, so here we go:
I think it's about how she's become his baggage. He's hurt her, but now he's stuck with the fact that she was a part of his life, even though it's over. He knows that he can still get in her head, because he knows her so well. But now he doesn't have that kind of control over her, and instead, he's kind of forced himself into an obsession with her. He knows that's what she wanted all along from him, but he was too busy controlling her before, so it's kind of a bitter love.
That's impressive, skittles. I wouldn't interpret that the relationship is over, based on "you can always say goodbye," which implies to me that they're still together, but otherwise you seem right on.
Chloe, I saw the "closer to divine" part as sort of sarcastic, the man's way of saying he was being more like what the woman wanted him to be. Some of that comes from hearing the song and how Adam sang that line - I don't think I would have gotten that just from reading the lyrics.
Maybe you're right, BG. That would go along with Nothing Like Me - "what you get ain't what you see, what you get may be nothing like me."
Well, I didn't mean over like they're completely broken up as much as they are emotionally broken up. The whole tone of the voice is "it's too late" for them to reconcile.

I don't have anything original to add, but I agree with BG and Skittles.
I'm not very good at analyzing anything. I always thought I went so deep in English papers, but I always got comments saying I'm just scratching the surface. So, I'm going to just smile and nod at this one.

Damnit, BG, you beat me to it! I was about to type that exactly. I take the "closer to divine" bit as a very tongue-in-cheek statement.
That happens to me a lot, CS. :-/
It just made me so mad, because I thought I wrote some really great papers. Grrr to English profs.

Cold, rainy afternoons are good for long naps and being a bum
Am I the only one who doesn't really care about the Olympics?
*runs to listen to Divine*
Yeah. I'm always like "oh, this is so good, I'm on to something!" and then it's not in depth enough.
Amber, I don't really care about sports or anything. As I've said before I like the team spirit of "You're going down."

Sorry for the threadjack, but where exactly does Raul mess up during the Chess concert? I believe Ashley told me it was during Quartet (A Model of Decorum...), but what exactly does he do wrong? I've listened to the concert dozens of times and have yet to notice anything.
It wasn't the Quartet. I can't remember the song, but everyone was on stage and they cut off. And he stood at the top on the stairs still going.
Damnit, BG, you beat me to it!
I didn't notice Raul messing up either, although I do remember a couple of instances where Norm Lewis seemed to flub his lines.
I better get going - I'm seeing Chita: A Dancer's Life tonight, and I have to pick my tickets up at the box office. Hopefully the Rentsecrets will be up by the time I get back.

Nevermind, beat me to it (on Raul)
Since you all have analyzed Divine so well, no point in adding to it. But this is amongst my favorite Mute songs...
It's during the quartet of Nobody's Side; he's up on the little platform, next to Seth. Everyone else is downstage, in a line, and their backs are to Seth. He just holds the note way longer than everyone else, so they cut off and you hear "siiiiiide" with the wacky vibrato for a few extra beats. It's so funny.
He's like a machine, so it takes me out a little when he messes up.
It's at the end of the Deal on my track listing. I don't even know if I've got all the songs titled correctly.

Thanks, Em. I assumed the "Quartet" was the other one. Actually, I noticed Raul's mistake earlier, but I didn't think it was a mistake! I thought he was just supposed to hold it longer. Heh.
I've been off listening to some other stuff I've got. Anyone who's an Elton John fan PM me.
