it didn't even start here.
I bet it's not snowing at Katz's house!
Care to explain your Not!Mitzvah? I'm intrigued.
Basically, less than a year before my Bat Mitzvah would have taken place, my temple's executive board voted to replace the rabbi who had been there since the founding of the temple with the Hebrew school teacher. The new rabbi was ultra-Orthodox and unlike his predcessor didn't believe in Bat Mitzvahs for girls - I would have been able to say a few prayers and my speech in one of the rooms in the basement where the old people played bingo, but nothing in the actual synagogue. Naturally, my family was really pissed about this - my grandfather had been active in that temple since its founding and the idea of his grandchild being relegated to the basement on what should have been a special occasion was just a slap in the face. I was heartbroken - I was the top student in my Hebrew school class, and it killed me that the boys who didn't take anything seriously would get to have their Bar Mitzvahs while I wouldn't have that opportunity. By the time we found out about the rabbi's decision, we had already booked a catering hall for the party that would have taken place afterwards, and we decided to go through with that. I said a few prayers there and gave the speech I had worked on with the rabbi. I did have to make one alteration, though - I didn't include the part of the speech about the importance of keeping Kosher, seeing as the veal parmigiana entree was being served right after my speech
What IS Bridge and Tunnel?
It's a one-woman show by Sarah Jones. The premise is that it's a reading session for immigrant poets at a theater in "beautiful south Queens," and Jones plays the roles of all of the poets, the leader of the event, and even an usher (in a hilarious bit at the beginning that I don't want to spoil). It was amazing how she moved so effortlessly between characters who were very different, and there were some very powerful scenes in addition to some really hilarious moments.
Wow, BG ... that was a rather sucky situation to be stuck in. I didn't realize that was part of the ultra-Orthodox view.
"..and it's beginning to snow!"
i'm in the mood to listen to that song
BG, that sucks. I would have seriously protested, that's really f*cked up.
haha I am! I like to watch the snow fall and listen to the song. It would be even cooler if this was christmas.
ETA: that is so wrong BG

Especially while watching people in the snow at the Olympics on TV :)
did the olympics start yet?
I was the first girl who reached Bat Mitzvah age under the new rabbi's tenure, and once word got out that he wasn't going to allow Bat Mitzvahs, most parents in the congregation pulled their daughters out of Hebrew school and either sent them to different temples or said f**k it and started planning sweet 16s instead.
Thinking about it now, what makes me the most upset about the whole situation is that my grandpa died before my younger brother's Bar Mitzvah and never got to see one of his grandchildren up there in the synagogue reading from the Torah.
Yeah. There has been some skiing, hockey, and random stuff this afternoon. They just mentioned that luge is next and I know that the pairs skating is on tonight.
The event I just watched was pretty bizarre. It was a 2 part event, first ski jumping and then cross country skiing for 15k. The guy who jumped the furthest got to start the race part first. Those are just 2 totally different skills and so I don't see why they were smushed into one event!

Aww, I'm sorry. That Rabbi was wrong, and it really stinks that it had to happen to you.
Aw, man. That is just wrong in so many ways, BG.
Oh God, my mom just called me with some really disturbing news. My brother's best friend - who has a bit of a history of psychological issues - was upset over a girl he liked not liking him back and took like a whole bottle of Tylenol. He's okay, but under observation in the psychiatric ward at the hospital. My brother is beside himself right now that his best friend might have been trying to commit suicide

At least he is okay.
That's too bad BBG.
JL, Canada's been doing pretty good today. We won gold in Women's Moguls (although they announced her as being American) and our women's hockey team won their game against Italy, 16-0.
Hope everything turns out ok ,BG.

I'm sorry to hear that, BG. ODing on Tylenol is one of the most drawn-out drug-related deaths one can suffer, so I'm glad to hear he's at least alright.
it is? that's scary.. what happens when you OD on tylenol?
Sorry I disappeared. I thought my kitchen was going to blow up.
Anyway, I'm sorry, BG. But at least he's okay. :-/
