Just got back from the show at my school.
Ragtime was great, but Chicago was amazing! They got away with A LOT of the sultry, sexy goodness of it!
Now, I know it was a high school production, but I think they butchered Rent a bit too much. LVB, was, obviously, abridged. But they used a lot of things that were in the movie such as Mimi/Angel friendship and dialogue. And the actors didn't even sing the right lyrics half the time. However, the boy who played Angel was PHENOMENAL, and I cried during "Without You," the one thing they did really well. They had the three tables and everything, which was a relief.
Oh, and they skipped "Light My Candle" and had Mimi interrupt Roger with "Out Tonight." Gahhhhh. /purist

Posted: 5/5/06 at 10:36pmYikes I'm tired! I just got back from a girl's night out with my mom. We got manicures and pedicures then we went to Starbucks. I usually don't like this sort of mother daughter stuff, but I must admit I had a good time.

Chloe - They did selections from each. Five from Ragtime, I think 6 from Chicago, and then a crapload from Rent.

Posted: 5/5/06 at 11:02pmI've been on such a Ragtime kick lately. Not that I'm ever.... not, but it's particularly strong at the moment. Which songs did your school do from that show, guitargeek? It's cool that they got away with actually staging so many of the songs from each of those shows.

Yeah, and in the synopsis for Rent, they said that "Joanne and Joanne were lesbian lovers."
Schizo lesbians, anyone?
EDIT: Rentsecrets are up. #10 made me laugh.

Posted: 5/6/06 at 9:33amI'm pretty sure there's a legal limit to how many songs from a production you can do that doesn't have the rights released, and your school went way beyond that. Especially if they partially staged it.
Wanting life but never knowing how
#437re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part ten
Posted: 5/6/06 at 9:49amI know they did, and the kid producing it acknowledged it. According to my friend, at the first rehearsal, he told them that what they were doing was illegal, even though the staging and costumes were completely different. The show was a student's senior project, so the school didn't exactly sanction it. They just gave him auditorium use for two nights.

hah, they not only *do* something illegal, but they acknowledge and announce it? That's pretty brave, and er, stupid. If the school could've gotten in trouble for allowing this, he should've been told to do something else for his senior project.
I think the limit is like three.
#439re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part ten
Posted: 5/6/06 at 10:28amNot only the school, but him personally as well for organizing this production. I'm sure a criminial charge would make a great impression on his college application.

Posted: 5/6/06 at 10:30amRight, definitely; I meant that even if the kid wanted to take the risk so he could do this project, you'd think the school would be worried about its reputation, or something, if he got caught. And then it's not even like he's doing something illegal and hoping nobody around knows the rules; he's announcing that it's illegal.

I don't think my school's administration even knew that he didn't get the rights. Well, the senior projects are done by the English teachers, and the projects have to be pre-approved by the teacher, so...
To The Stage: Here's the breakdown -
Seasons of Love was pretty good. The teenyboppers in the audience kept singing alone with it, which was annoying, but the singers were good. The soloist was excellent!
Rent was...odd. Mark and Roger were fantastic, but the keyboard-guitar effects were scary and made it sound like Phantom of the Opera.
OSG...the actor playing Roger kept forgetting the lyrics! But he has a great voice, so I guess he made up for it. They should've taped the lyrics down on the table.
The girl playing Mimi wasn't bad, but the choreography for Out Tonight was awkward. She kept shuffling from one side of the stage to the other, not even dancing.
Another Day was probably one of the better songs. The actors and actresses were very into it, and the choreography was more...believable, for lack of a better word.
Will I was fabulous! The voices blended together very well, and it was very haunting. Beautifully done.
I'll Cover You was adorable! Besides the fact that Angel and Collins were white, they were very much like Angel and Collins. The boy playing Angel (our school's token actor) wore a skirt, high-heel boots, and some crazy scarves and other accessories. It was cute.
LVB - scaaaaaary. It was a condensed 2 minute LVB/LVB B mixture. It was okay, but the highlight was Angel leaping off of the table and sticking her landing.
In Take Me Or Leave Me, the girl playing Maureen started singing Joanne's part a few times, but her voice was good. Joanne was fantastic, though. It wasn't bad overall.
Without You was gorgeous. They had the three tables set up like in the real show, with Maureen/Joanne on the left, Roger/Mimi in the middle, and Angel/Collins on the end. Maureen and Joanne didn't do much during the song, but Angel and Collins were heartbreaking. The way Collins held Angel seemed so genuiune; they both seemed very comfortable in their roles, which is something you don't see very often in high school shows. Anyway, Roger and Mimi sang very well, and I could tell that they were getting a little choked up toward the end. They had Angel die in Collins' arms at the end, and when he did, Collins kissed his forehead and my friend and I nearly lost it. It was so beautifully done that it affected me like the real thing does.
What You Own was great, very powerful and full of emotion. They had Roger and Mark interact a bit, which was interesting. The harmonies at the end were really cool.
Finale B - what a way to end the show! It was well done and the blending of voices was superb. When Angel came out again, the applause was deafening. Beautiful.
Phew, okay, that's my mini-review. Now to work on my speech for Humanities...

I haven't heard Forbidden Broadway, but everyone seems to agree that it's very funny. The parody Rent lyrics I saw were hysterical. If I recall correctly, "these pants are too tight" was somehow fit into OSG.
Am I the only loser still looking at Rentsecrets?

No, Chloe.
I realized this morning that I hadn't read them yet and went to look immediately.

Forbidden Broadway makes me smile.
My personal favorite is 'This Ain't Boheme' - "The opposite of Rent ain't Boheme--it's Okalahoma!"

So did I. They're getting so lame (moreso than they already were) and the numbers are dwindling!
Were they this lame when we were all obsessed with them?
