We're always glad to welcome new Adam fans. I'm not sure about where that reputation comes from, and maybe someone who's been around longer can answer better, but I'll put in my 2 cents. First of all, some Rentheads got angry with him for ducking out of the theater and not doing the stage door thing. They thought he was being a diva, but my impression is that he's something of an introvert and the whole crazy fan situation started to freak him out.

The other reason doesn't have anything to do with anyone's personal encounter (or lack of one) with him, but with things he's said in interviews. He's extremely candid at times. The most recent example is when the NY Times ran a story on the Rent movie cast. Adam said he was looking into doing more film work because the material being offered on Broadway was atrocious. That provoked something of a firestorm on the main board here, with people accusing him of ingratitude and defending Broadway shows.

He later clarified in a Playbill interview that he was only talking about what was being offered to him, which those of us who know something about him had inferred all along, but I wonder if many of the people who initially got so angry with him read that. (You should look it up, it's very good.)

Finally, he has a rather imposing aura about him, which translates into killer stage presence, but some people interpret it as arrogance.
