my only big complaint is the people IN the theatre, not the theatre itself.
Yeah, them too. Example: When I saw Rent in Union Square, there wer elots of fangirls out. One scream "I LOVE YOU WILSON!" when she saw Wilson J's name on the screen. Then there was the other group, chattering on about how Eye-dina is such a better actress than Kristin Chenoweth, etc.
Allie, that's interesting that movies don't have the same rating nationwide in Canada. It would be fascinating to see what would happen if ratings could vary by state in the US - with the red state/blue state gap being as wide as it is...

Wow, in that case I'm glad that all the times I went to see it at Union Square were on weekday afternoons when all of the fangirl types were probably at school and I was the youngest person in the theater.
We used to drive down to Florida every March break to visit my Grandma who had a house down there (I guess this is pretty much where my name comes from and my love of sunshine). Anyway, it was a day and a half trip and my dad would usually play showtunes. We listened to Phantom, Joseph, Tommy, and Les Mis (which got turned down during Master of the House). Then when I was ten there was this program in Toronto with Phantom of the Opera and music programs in elementary schools, so I got to go see that, and from then on I was hooked. I actually gave my dad the CD versions of our tapes for Christmas this year.

And that's only the Empire Theatres company. There are others, I'm sure. But, yeah, some provinces have a PG rating, and others have a 14A.
I go to a ton of movies in theaters, but that's mainly because it's one of the only things to do around here. During the semester I don't really have time, but on breaks I do a lot of catching up.
Nia, can't see BBM w/ any family members? Or even just alone? I mean I know it's a social convention that it's weird to go to a movie by yourself, but considering you're silent most of the time...I do this more w/ shows but if there is a movie I want to see that badly(trouble is there aren't that many), and I can't find anyone to see it w/, I just shrug and go myself. May very well end up doing that w/ The Producers, got a couple of my friends to see Rent so I'm doubting I could convince them to see another movie musical w/ me even though they liked Rent.
Heh, my aunt and mom got me into Broadway, but I've totally surpassed them both in terms of being fans of it.
Oh yeah, I'm sure my dad thinks he's created a monster.
Ooh, well I'm probably seeing the Thurs. afternoon showing of Rent at Union Square b/c if nothing changes, that'll be the last time to see it and I decided I'm seeing it on the last possible day. Hopefully I won't get much of those.
Course at Symphony Space there was a girl singing a bit...heh then I told her I didn't pay 50 bucks to hear HER sing the songs

Haha... it was a Thursday afternoon. It was during the holiday break, though. And the sad part is, most of them seemed to be a little older than me (I'll be 17 next week). Sad, no?
Snowbird, it's pretty sad if those stories encourage viewership, but you can never underestimate people. My newspaper kinda wrote about it w/ a warning, so it gave the impression of trying to deter ppl from seeing it who may have similar reactions. Highly doubt I'd see it anyway, and I usually just laugh at horror movies, I'm not easily scared, but still not seeing it b/c of what I heard.

No, my mother would not like BBM too much...
Snowbird, . I wish my family were more like yours. Florida? Is your family originally from the US or did your grandparents just move there?
I like shopping and catching a movie alone every once in a while. Occasionally it's nice to just get lost in your own thoughts and not have to worry about someone else. Brokeback Mountain might be the sort of movie that you'd want to see with someone just so you can discuss it afterward, though. My friend and I had a long conversation about the movie on the way home.
The last time I saw Rent, there were two high school girls sitting beside me singing along. They weren't singing loudly the whole time they kinda drifted in and out. I hate it when people sing along. When I saw my school's production of Sound of Music this guy behind me was tapping along and humming the whole time.
WRQ, that was my thought too. It makes me want to see it less. But there are those people that are I guess thrill-seekers or something that have to see it just to see because of those warnings.
Yeah I agree Snowbird. Or some ppl may want to see it just to say they saw the movie where ppl reacted that way...ya never know.
See Siren, it's funny, BBM I would consider to be a perfect movie to see alone. On my drive home I could think of and analyze and grasp the meaning of everything, and chances are I could come on here and someone started a thread about it or even start my own thread, or call someone who's already seen it and then discuss it after I've collected my thoughts.
It's the big comedies I don't like to see alone. I just like to have someone laughing there w/ me that I know. Maybe it's b/c a lot of my friends even after a movie like BBM I'd be like what do you think? It was good. End of convo.

I never laugh at comedy movies or TV shows when I'm alone.
Nope Nia, we're pure Canadians. My grandmother just bought the house and stayed there for six months over the winter. And me and my brother always had a week off in March for school, so we took an extra week and had a vacation. My grandmother got older and couldn't keep travelling back and forth so she sold it my first year of highschool.

I think that all 3 times I saw it at Union Square were Friday afternoons when school was in session. I'm 19, and most of the people in the theater looked like they were old enough to be my grandparents, which always made me worry that I had somehow wandered in to the wrong movie. I agree with you about the sad part - people my age tend to scare me with how immature many of them can be.
As for parents and Broadway, my mom is the one who got me interested in seeing shows - her father used to take her to see Broadway shows all the time when she was a little girl, so it made her want to do the same with me. She's not a huge Broadway fan, though - she still calls cast recordings "soundtracks" and only sees a few shows a year because tickets are so expensive (when we were at the TKTS booth the other day, she was going on and on about how when she was my age, orchestra seats were 20 bucks).

It's definitely annoying when people sing along, but I will admit that my friends and I have sung little bits of "La Vie Boheme" in the theater. Immature and annoying, I know, but we couldn't help ourselves...
This is utterly random, but someone posted this link on the Rent Secrets LJ community:

I'm sure it's been discussed at one point during this thread before, but does anyone know if it's true? I kind of hope it is because I LOVE it when celebs get big heads. <3 It's so funny. "HELLO, I'M SWEATING!"
I don't think anyone knows if there's truth to it, but it's funny as all hell!
I did sing with the end credits, but it was just me and my friend there so I wasn't bothering anyone.

I mean, getting someone to wipe his brow? That's on the same level of Mariah Carey forcing someone to bring the straw to her mouth rather than reaching for the cup herself.
I can't stop laughing.
Anyway. I'm sure most of you have already seen it, but I've been following that Rent Secrets community from the start and find it so amusing. I think a lot of the stuff is overly harsh and definitely on the mean side, but I guess it wouldn't be a secrets community without that.
Ooh, yeah after 4 times of not being able to, the 5th time, my friend had to make a phone call so I finally got to stay for the credits and sing along to everything and dance a little...course the ppl came in to clean and were giving me weird looks when I was dancing but I never let that sort of stuff phase me
I kinda prefer to be alone when watching comedies because I'd be a bit embarrassed if I were howling with laughter at something and the other people I was watching it with weren't laughing as much.
Heh, Page Six is usually a piece of crap (not surprising, as it's in the New York Post, which barely deserves to be called a newspaper), but that gossip item is kinda funny.
*thinks naughty thoughts about Sweaty!Adam*
I don't like seeing movies by myself at all, I think mostly because I like to talk a bit and comment on them. My mom was telling me today that she nevers heres me laugh when I'm on my own watching TV (mostly cuz I feel stupid), but I couldn't help it with Will & Grace last night.
I know this topic has been discussed a lot in the past and it's completely off-topic, but I felt the need to bring it back. I just got home from dinner with a high school friend and 2 of her friends that I've never met. I would say that roughly 3/4 of the conversation revolved around partying, drinking, and getting completely trashed. Please reassure me that I am not totally weird for having absolutely no desire to participate in said actions. Maybe it's because they don't go to school in NYC, so they feel like there's nothing else to do, but they made it seem like it was so important (I mean, it was obviously worthy of 3/4 of our conversation in their minds).
