I haven't seen it yet. Something tells me that I would've enjoyed it more than the movie I saw though.

You say that as if it's surprising that you'd want to see it dancing. But definitely go see it, it's a great movie.

It was a bit surprising at first, actually. It didn't seem like something I would really want to see, but now I think I do.

Get thee to the movies!

I shall.

Watching Annie on ABC family right now ... I knew the Rent loft was on the same street backlot but couldn't really place it til I saw the movie tonight. We got a good look at all the stuff to the right of the loft. :)

Oh okay dancing, makes sense now, you meant you personally, when I say that I usually mean yeah I know lots of ppl don't but I do...anyway glad you've come around and want to see it Jake Gyllenhaal!

I hate the fact that the only good movies come out all around the same time--a year full of crap movies, and then it's December and there's either better or more entertaining movies...like I loved Brokeback and want to go back, but I still have quite a few movies I need to see for the FIRST time before I would go back to Brokeback. And there's been so many months w/ nothing playing I've wanted to see-ulgh.

I know what you mean, wrq...I think I saw one movie in the theater between last year this time and when Rent came out, and I've seen a bunch lately.

I just saw Brokeback Mountain for the first time, and I totally agree about feeling an emptiness and an overlaying sadness after the movie. I haven't posted anything about it because I think I'm still digesting it. It was a beautiful, layered movie. Jake and Heath do a great job portraying the conflict that's involved with a situation like this. The supporting actors turn in great performances as well, and strangely I was left feeling pity for almost every character. There was a melancholy gorgeousness to all of the locations and cinematography. The story has an epic feel to it, but there's an element of subtlety and understatement that I didn't expect to be there that grounds it in reality.

I think I'm going to go see it again this weekend, because I don't feel that I've even begun to get everything out of it yet.

I'm with you WRQ- Right now, there are about 8 movies in theatres that I want to see, and during the rest of the year there might be one at a time. I really wish they would spread the good movies out. They'd probably each make more money that way anyway.

I hear ya, WRQ. The last movie I saw in theaters before Rent, was... Bewitched, I think. There was just nothing that I wanted to see. Now there are a bunch of movies I want to see.

I think it's just that the majority of mainstream, big-deal movies ARE crap. Good stuff slips in, but it's not usually all the rage.

I usually go to the movies with my Dad over the break, mostly because that's all we really have in common. I've only seen four movies over the break, but that feels like a lot to me because I usually wait for the DVD.

CanadianSnowbird- I have a similar thing with my Dad with Broadway. That's the only reason I see a lot of shows..it's the only thing we have in common and he wants to spend time with me.

I actually really, really hate movie theatres. I can't fully explain it. I think it has something to do with the lack of windows and clocks- I feel lost, like I'm in a time warp. It really freaks me out if I fall asleep during the day, wake up and don't know how long I've been out for. Movies have a lesser but similar effect.

And they're so damned loud! When I saw Star Wars III, I had a hideous headache afterwards.

Eh, I..well...more a year or two ago then now b/c of all the shows in addition to movies, but have kept an eye out for the little ones. In America came out in like June and didn't get much play, but I caught it in Jersey and loved it. But I do agree the better ones especially before winter are ones that are not mainstream.

The last time I think I went to a movie before Rent b/c I was like I really wanna see this movie was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I've seen and liked a few in between-Just Like Heaven, Elizabethtown, Skeleton Key, but those were either my friends or family wanted to see it or my friend and I were bored and were like what do you want to do, go to a movie, okay what's playing, etc.

On a slightly related note, I read in my newspaper today that at the Toronto Film Festival, "Hostil" caused a woman to have a heart attack and a man to faint...

*waves to nia*

I'm really not much of a moviegoer and I tend to pick happy movies over sad ones when I do go, but with the way everyone in this thread is raving about Brokeback Mountain I think I'm going to see it once I'm back in Manhattan.

"I hate the fact that the only good movies come out all around the same time--a year full of crap movies, and then it's December and there's either better or more entertaining movies...like I loved Brokeback and want to go back, but I still have quite a few movies I need to see for the FIRST time before I would go back to Brokeback. And there's been so many months w/ nothing playing I've wanted to see-ulgh."

I think a lot of that has to do with studios wanting to save their Oscar contenders for the end of the year so they'll be fresh in Academy members' minds.

Well I love everything about movie theaters themselves and the experience of going to movies as opposed to watching them on DVD...I usually slip in to miss the 20 minutes worth of commercials, so my only big complaint is the people IN the theatre, not the theatre itself.

I'm good, nia. I was told to doing something "fun" this weekend, so we'll see how that goes. Jake Gyllenhaal!

The only movie I'm upset that I missed is Walk The Line. My sister raved about that one.

I was just looking on my local theatre's site, and I'm curious about Casanova. All the commercials have said it's rated R (American channels), but in some provinces here, it's only rated PG! That's quite a difference.

Same with my dad he's the only one in my family that likes musicals. We always listen to some soundtrack during long car rides. I've tried to convince him to see Rent, which I think he would like, he probably will when I own it and he doesn't have to pay for it. He's not all that comfortable with same-sex relationships.
WRQ, they've been saying that on the radio here. I'm not sure if that's supposed to make more people want to go see it or not.

*sigh* I need to find time for BBM... trouble is, I no longer have any friends to go with. Grr.

Snowbird, that's odd. My family always wants me to shut up whenever the word "broadway" escapes my mouth. Did they get you into theatre?
