I'm reading the Beggar's Opera. I can't pay attention. My mind, it runs...
There are like four Cabaret alum, including Esparza, in Company. I think. And I think several of them did the show during one of his two runs, which I guess is purely coincidence.
He'd be SO GOOD as the Emcee, plus the fact that I love what they get to WEAR.

"plus the fact that I love what they get to WEAR."
hehe, I was just thinking the same thing. WHAT?! The costumes are pretty, that's all. *cough*

The suspenders make me kind of happy. As does the excessive eye makeup.
See, I told you. PERVERSION.

Posted: 3/28/06 at 3:21pmIt makes me even happier when it's poster sized.

Posted: 3/28/06 at 3:23pmI remember... winter '03/'04, walking down Broadway and seeing the reflection of a HUGE -- I'm talking like 20 feet tall -- Cabaret billboard as I came around a corner. I think it was on 47th street, and there was just this MASSIVE photo of Adam in that costume. I just kind of stopped and stared. Somewhere, I have pictures of it.

Posted: 3/28/06 at 3:23pmSo wait, was Mano in the cast when Raul was playing the Emcee? Maybe there's some sordid bitterness between them...

Billboard size?
*dreams*

I'm not sure; we'd have to poke around for some dates. Raul was in the show twice, and I *think* -- I could be making this up -- that some of the other former Cabaret case members who are now in Cincy with Raul were in the show when he was. But because of the rate of turnover they had, plus the fact that so many swings were in the show for pretty long lengths of time, that's not to say that Mano was in the show when Raul was.
And if there were, Mano wouldn't have HAD to say he liked Raul -- personally, not professionally. He could've just said nothing. He said he had met Raul a few times, and that he's a really nice guy.

Ooh, I love the discussion of Pirelli in this production and how the reverse gender thing plays into it. I agree with what you said, BroadwayChica, that it adds another layer entirely to the scene where Pirelli reveals himself to Sweeney to think that they might've had some past history together. I probably wouldn't have come to that conclusion myself while watching the production, but it seems to be a pretty valid point of speculation. There's definitely something going on in that scene with regards to gender and power and Pirelli's motivations for revenge.
Sexually ambiguous characters are always so interesting.

Posted: 3/28/06 at 3:27pmRight, he didn't have to say whether or not he liked Raul.

Yeah, you're right. Unless he was being diplomatic of course.
"Raul..that asshole...I mean, yeah, he's nice...*rolls eyes*"
And glad you agree, ss! I've had arguments with people who think I'm out of my mind for even suggesting that!!

I suppose he could've just been trying to preserve my image, since he thinks I down-and-out worship the guy. Which I do, professionally. Personally, while I LIKE him, that's another story. I don't envy him many, many personal things. But yeah, diplomatic could easily have been saying nada.
Anyway. Pirelli!
These kinds of discussions make me happy. And not do my reading. hah.

Posted: 3/28/06 at 3:31pmMano was in Cabaret before Jesus Christ Superstar, which was in 2000. So... unless I'm very mistaken, they wouldn't have crossed paths there.

Posted: 3/28/06 at 3:32pmSo then that would mean some of the other people stayed longer than he did, til the advent of Mr. E. :)

Posted: 3/28/06 at 3:37pmI saw Cabaret with Michael Hall as Emcee. I think Mano was still around for that. Which would make it TWICE that I saw Mano onstage before knowing how much I'd grow to worship him. Nice.

hah. Michael was supposed to be excellent.
I will always regret being so late to the game on that show.
When Mano brought it up, I was THISCLOSE to blurting out "I LOVE THAT SHOW SO MUCH!" but... that would've been dumb.

Posted: 3/28/06 at 3:40pmRight. I've heard that some of the swings stayed on for a very long time. The Broadway.com article says he understudied Denis O'Hare and Michael Stuhlbarg, so... whenever they were there?

Posted: 3/28/06 at 3:41pmMichael was fantastic. I remember years later, I was watching Six Feet Under, and there was one of those dream-y song and dance numbers, and I just stared at the tv, and went: "OMG! THAT'S THE EMCEE!!!"

I saw Jon Secada. Laugh at will!
And then my Adam. Who redeemed everything and then some.

I saw Jon Secada in Grease. I was, um, sort of a fan of his at the time. His songs were HUGE with my generation.
Don't blame me!!! I didn't know any better!!!

Posted: 3/28/06 at 3:44pmI don't mind him as a singer, at all. He was just really, really wrong for Cabaret. He's still not a bad singer -- he was just wrong!
