The Pope has died

for those that don't know. (I didn't see a previous thread)
It is ridiculous to set a detective story in New York City. New York City is itself a detective story... AGATHA CHRISTIE, Life magazine, May 14, 1956

re: The Pope has died

At the opening of the first session of General Conference today, President Gordon B. Hinckley gave a brief statement on behalf of the membership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints expressing sympathy to the Catholic Church and its members at this sad time. He acknowledged Pope John Paul II's ministry and his fearless work for moral issues and human dignity.

It was a sweet tribute.

Me too! I actually will be leaving on my mission June 1. I'm taking notes on conference right now for one of my religion classes at BYU.

re: The Pope has died

Cool. Where are you going? I have a friend entering on that day, too. He's going to Argentina. He's the third one of the sons in that family to go Spanish-speaking. The fourth son who did not serve is a High School Spanish teacher... LOL!

I served in the California Santa Rose Mission in northern California 86-87 (I'm a gal so it was 18 months).

I'm gonna have to listen to the next session on-line (I was at the Stake Center for the first one) my lasagne is still baking.

re: The Pope has died

I am going to Asuncion, Paraguay(Spanish speaking). I'm really excited. I'm a little nervous due to the fact that I don't know any Spanish(I took French in high school). I missed the first session this morning due to the fact that I was applying for my passport. Luckilly the BYU channel shows them again. Russell M. Nelson's talk was awesome.

Mr. Roxy ignore the totally ignorant. Even if you did not believe in him or had no faith, you should respect a person's passing. He was truly a great man. AMEN

May the gates of Heaven open to welcome a great man, a man of moral and principle, and an advocate of Human Rights and Dignity.

The people of Poland will miss you, Karol, and you are thanked for all you have done.

I have just returned from a vigil in the Main Cathedral in Warsaw, and at the beginning there were several thousands there praying for the man that helped to free their country from oppression. After it was announced he had died, thousands more flocked to the square. When I left there were over ten thousand people outside the church, and thousands more were coming.

re: The Pope has died

1.) I don't care for the Pope an anyway.. he preached hate under the guise of love.

2.) My comment refered to more than a day of hearing "He's gonna die soon".. "he's almost dead".. "he should be dying any minute now"...

re: The Pope has died

Well, I guess I spoke to soon

It was nice while it lasted.

By the way, 2 movies dealing with (in whole or part) the death of a Pope

1. The Cardinal
2. The Shoes Of The Fisherman - dealing with the election of a Polish Pope

Elvis,

Good luck as you serve. And, you will be assisted as you learn Spanish. The promise and gift will be yours. :o)

And, from this morning's session, be sure to study Elder Packer's talk. Powerful teaching from the Book of Mormon. Really inspired.

Best wishes. It will be the best 2 years that will have such influence throughout the remainder of your life.

re: The Pope has died

Paradox--

Thanks for sharing that with us. What a poignant moment for the people of Poland.

President Gordon B. Hinckley of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints read this statement at the beginning of the second session of General Conference today:

“We join those throughout the world who mourn the passing of Pope John Paul II, an extraordinary man of faith, vision, and intellect, whose courageous actions have touched the world in ways that will be felt for generations to come."

“The Pope’s voice remained firm in defense of freedom, family, and Christianity. On matters of principle and morality he was uncompromising. On his compassion for the world's poor, he has been unwavering.”

re: The Pope has died

Shoes of the Fisherman actually was about a Russian pope, not Polish, but similar enough, and pretty much an insane idea when the movie was made, since there hadn't been a non-Italian pope for almost 450 years at the time. I was actually trying to find my copy of that to watch last night--I'll have to look harder today.

re: The Pope has died

I didn't agree with the Pope on many issues. However, I had the opportunity to meet him on three occasions and was impressed with him charisma and amiabile nature.

May he rest in peace.
