i was talking to this kid the other day and he was all starry-eyed and star-struck (which still makes me laugh...)
he was "considering" a life in the theatre and I had to let him know that is not something you "consider" - it's something you are DRIVEN TO DO WITH EVERY FIBER OF YOUR BEING - otherwise - it's just not worth it...
I mean here he is telling me how much "fun" it is and how he enjoyed community theatre so much that it was okay to work for free....
pullleeezzzzeee! When his RENT is due - he'll mind working for free!!!
How many other professions do you know that people train for years, spend a fortune on that training and then go out into the world to NOT get paid for their expertise?
Only in showbiz kids... only in showbiz....

some doctors face that problem...
do you know how stage managers and crew people fare in the theatre world?
Broadway Legend Joined: 11/20/04
crew fares better because there is more work...
it's like the military - for every soilder in the front there are 5 people in the rear....
same in theatre - for example - the touring cast of LK is about 60 cast memebers... the crew is around 109 with another 100 or so added in each city...
this is why i'm still a union wardrobe member and am working crew here at the tv station...
i've done 2 out of the 3 possible roles available to me on Broadway... yet my mortgage must still pay and my kids must still eat and there is no such thing as a 1 income household anymore (unless it's a single-parent household... ya know?)

design is very competitive so be prepared to do a lot of "free" work and guerilla theatre to build your portfolio and your relationships....
you may try to get some work in the "art departments" of films...
it's easier to get a little non-union work in those departments..
Off-off bway is where you'll be able to cut your teeth in theatre...
Off-bway has become very commercial (and therefore very union)
If you have connections - you can try for an apprenticeship sooner than later - or try to attach yourself to some of the supply houses (i.e. the set builinding shops or lighting shops, etc...)that way you'll have steady work while building your connections, etc...
you live in the area which is good - you will need a car if you're going to do crew work - you'll always be carrying crap, your "kit", people, and God knows what else...
crew days are ususally 10 hrs min (12 for film) and lots of overtime...
the good news is - when you work YOU WORK!!! the bad new is, when you don't YOU DON'T....
like 2000 when the strike happened - BOING!!! Lot's of folks went down for the count.....
plan it out while as carefully as you can - offer your folks some rent and STAY HOME until you get your fiscal grove on...!! (a luxury I wish I could have taken advantage of....)
unless you have it like that already of course ... ;-D

She's leaving in April, i thought....
thanks for that Fredi - sounds like i have my work cut out for me...
it was either design, or being a stage manager...
(why does it all have to be so competitive lol)
Fredi if you ever do get offered Motormouth again, NTG and I will sponser a field trip to see you
no joke
