So THAT'S what went screwy. I couldn't pull this site up, it took like five minutes. I honestly freaked out. bww is equivocal (wrong word, but I can't remember what it should be right now) to oxygen.
ok good - thought that was just my computer being crazy
phew - crisis averted
Half birthdays? I don't know when mine is. *thinks about it* I think it's in August... haha...
Anyway, happy half-birthday, BEKA! Where on Long Island are you? Nassau or Suffolk? What what, LI pride! Haha.

Big brother was a term used during the cold war.. They would say big brother is watching, made people all paranoid.. Now they have that silly reality show that I can't stand.. It's supposed to be the same thing, you are always being watched..

Hello all! My name is Johanna, and I'm a tad new at this, so please be kind :)
It's taken me all of last night and part of tonight to get through reading this thread--which is time-consuming, but wonderful because it's still Thanksgiving break!
Anyhow, I wanted to say one thing and ask one question of Fredi. First of all, Fredi, I think what you had to say earlier about going after your dreams is wonderful! I second that completely. I have always found, though, that it's good to keep in mind that who you are is seperate from what you love to do. If you concentrate on developing your sense of self in addition to working toward your dreams, I think it makes it easier to face rejection that will inevitably (sp?) come no matter your goal. It's who you are as a person that will get you through on days when your dream seems unattainable. Believe me, I know from personal experience. I wanted to be a professional ballet dancer, but let's just keep it short and say it didn't work out.
Anyhow, my question for Fredi is this: What was a typical day like while you were performing in Rent? How long does it take to get ready to perform a show like that?
Sorry if that's pedantic, but it's all I've got this evening...I think my brain is still on vacation from school at the moment :)
big brother comes from the book 1984 - it's a classic - i difinitely reccomend it
the idea is that some all powerful being is watching and controlling your every move - but not a religious kind of figure - it was more a threatening idea - big brother trying to create complete conformity
anybody else got a better way to explain?
you've just been introduced to the literary freak in me - lol

actually Big Brother refers to our own government...
they just USED it during the cold war (just like their using terror scares now) to keep the public terrified, hyped up and buying a lot of sh** they don't necessarily need.....
absolutely read 1984 -
literary freaks unite!!!
The problem with the terror alerts is that the american public has become numb to them. We are always under high alert, orange red etc.. I can't stand to watch the news anymore.. Its all so annoying and depressing..
adam- your icon is spectaularly frightening!

That was probably also a good economic strategy, then, to make people buy things to protect against it.
I just finished Memoirs of a Geisha and so I need something to read. I'll pick up 1984, thanks for the reccommendation.
a few years back my modern class did a 'big brother' themed dance..it was pretty cool
camerangel - thanks - that pic always makes me laugh

same economic strategy with Y2K...
right - like all the computers in the world were going out at once...
SHOP DAMMIT - that's the name of the game..
mindless consumerism - it's the american way...
Ha, I just got a little upset right there when I saw bwaybabe's icon... Poor "Bare"...
My cousin was in it, I would have loved to see the new revisions...
