In the Wizard of Oz book, it's not a dream. She is whisked back to Kansas.

"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

I can't believe I'm joining a Wicked thread either... but i love Wicked. Well, I hate to say this because I don't want a bad rep. but I loved Wicked originall because I think Idina Menzel is an amazing artist and performer and tend to love all the shows she's in. (hopefully I spelled all that right)... but yes, anyway, My fave part of wicked is that each time I see (3 times now) I see something new (ie like the Witch's shadow in the clock), or notice a new hilarious line. It's almost more like seeing a movie rather than a Broadway show- it belongs in its own category.. it's a spectacle.

I also dislike them taking out the Animals rights issue from the book. It is so central to Elphaba's character development, and without it I never quite feel as if the musical's Elphaba is as dedicated / extreme / inspired to oppose the wizard. It takes out a lot of the depth that I loved in the book / novel's version of Elphaba (no disprespect to either Idina or Shosh).

But I loved that Elphaba did not die in the musical (personally), and because it IS a show and a commercial product dependent upon audience approval etc. and without that uplifting ending not as many people would have liked it and it would not have done as well commercially...I understand why they changed / added / clarified it.

I think a good acotr could get the Animal issue point across...but I agree. Perhaps in addition to Sentimental Man (I like how it comes back later on and is more touching) or as an intro to Defying Gravity, or before I'm Not that Girl, there was a song (a duet between Elphaba and Fiyero, maybe reprised btwn Elphie and the Wizard, and again with Glinda and Elphie) about how Elphaba is all about Animals' Rights...

im a wicked fan, and i like to think that im sane. mostly...

my own biggest problem with the show is that fiyero is underwritten so yeah, it seems like a jump that hes in love. but im guessing in a few scenes we're supposed to get the idea that they hang out, that time is passing, etc. and theyre just skipping stuff... the whole show isnt supposed to happen in a weeks time right?

As concerns the ending - it is fully within the rights of the creators to take whatever license they want with the source material to fashion the pice they want to create. When Lerner and Loewe were working on My Fair Lady, Alan Jay Lerner, an incurable romantic, insisted on adding the last scene where Eliza comes back to Henry's house. He wanted to leave the audience with at least the thought that they had not been parted forever. This certainly was not in the original concept of Pygmalian - and not in keeping with Shaw's ideas at all. But it was their creation to do with as they saw fit - to convey that which they wanted to.

yes, bso, we should totally make a website. after working on JoAnne1's, though.

and yes, mistress, i also have a problem with how fiyero suddenly falls in love. but the show does take place over years, not weeks.

umm, shouldnt you wait to see if more than two people are interested first? i think a few people here ahem*bwayguy*ahem might think making a fanclub is completely contrary to the whole sane thing. (just noting his reaction to the fanclub idea on the hairspray forum) Updated On: 1/12/05 at 11:12 PM
