The Stepford Wives

The opposite of creation isn't war, it's stagnation.

Posted: 6/15/04 at 5:24pmThe Stepford Wives was a horrible movie and Matthew Brodrick was terrible in it. I wanted to like it but oh well.

I just read the Time magazine review, and Corliss basically enhoyed it, and said it has been too dumped upon. I certainly laughed at Rudnek's wit, particularly the frontal attack on reality tv, etc., but finally just didn't get what all the fixes and cuts did for it. It didn't hang together as satire or a plain old comedy -- forget thriller.
If anyone who has seen it really understands the last half hour -- who did what to whom, and who is/was/is no longer a robot and why -- please IM me even the briefest of explanations. I honest to God didn't get it, particularly the weird "techno-strokes" at the big party (will say no more for people who haven't seen it.) The whole brain thing did't wash with the robot thing -- did it? Maybe I stopped listening.

We finally rented this last night and I was very disappointed. The original was so much darker and actually frightening and full of tension. Glenn Close was great in this one, but still the film left me with questions - especially after watching the extras on the DVD...if they are actually women with microchips in their brains, then they are not physically "robots" and yet all the scenes that were deleted had them using all kinds of mechanical gadgets that came out of their bodies (Bette Midler's character had a huge scene cut in which she transformed into a lawn mower and mowed the lawn - it was completely ridiculous)
And I will never understand the gay stereotyping that continues to happen in film - and written by an openly gay writer, no less!

The movie was okay. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't even remotely as good as it should have been.
I wish that Frank Oz would have kept the original cut of the film, in which not only did Joanna actually become a robot, but there was no nonsensical "computer chip" subplot. Also, in the original version, the women WERE killed and replaced by robots.
The idea of using "The Stepford Wives" as a black comedy is a genius one, but SO much more could have been done with it.
The cast was pretty good, for the most part. Nicole Kidman was solid as Joanna. She predictably handled the character's 'dramatic aspect', but she also displayed a talent for comedic timing. Bette Midler and Glenne Close were pretty funny, and Roger Bart had a few laughs as well ("Is that a DVD?"). On the flip side, neither Matthew Broderick, Christopher Walken, or Jon Lovitz did anything of notice.
Terrific Danny Elfman-esque score.
