The Sterile Cuckoo on TCM

I'm always in conflict when this is on. Her performance is SO GOOD that I get lost in her story and get depressed! As Sueleen said, you must see this for Liza's amazing talent. And yes, amazing is the word!

Love this film and I agree that Liza should have won an Oscar for this. She breaks my heart in this film. I'm definitely recording this tomorrow.

Triple yes to "Junie Moon"! Liza, Ken Howard, Robert Moore and of course Kay Thompson (Liza's real-life godmother) as their landlady.
Great film directed by Otto "The Terrible".

I love Pookie Adams! And while I agree she was Oscar-worthy in that movie, I wouldn't have taken it away from Maggie Smith in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.

But when Liza was nominated again 3 years later, and in another (VERY) tight race for Best Actress, this time SHE got the edge over the other front-runner Diana Ross in "Lady Sings the Blues." The Academy does that a lot. They remember if you "deserved" it once before, especially if it was fairly recently, but didn't win the award. It helps give you the edge over a tight race.

It was definitely deserved, but it was a VERY close race that year.

Minnelli's previous loss in a year that she "deserved it" gave her the edge.

I don't think you're remembering how close Diana Ross came to winning that year. She was most definitely a front-runner, neck-and-neck with Minnelli going into the voting and awards season. The "buzz" going into that night was that Ross was going to win, at least according to the press. But it was her first film, and Minnelli had already been award-worthy previously.

It's interesting to note that Diana Ross was in the "Drama" category for the Golden Globes that year. Today, she would have competed with Minnelli in their Comedy Or Musical category. They think of bio-pics with singing actors as "musicals," like La Vie En Rose or Ray. Back then, they didn't.

If I remember correctly Ms Ross nomination was also the root beginnings of the self promoting ads in the trades. Something that probably hurt her then but is considered normal now.

Dame---You're probably right, but I was too young to be reading the trades back then at the age of nine.

I was into the Oscars at an early age, because my parents and grandparents had been in the biz. They knew many of the nominees and winners back then, and my grandfather had been going to the Oscars himself from the first ceremony though the mid '50s. So, I grew up watching with the folks and getting hooked as a youngster.

...and all "tangents" aside... It would make sense that Barry Gordy would heavily promote Diana back then in the trades (and anywhere else he could think of), since he came from the music biz not the movie biz. It's a different approach entirely. That's when you will usually get infusions of unorthodox tactics to either the creative process or the publicizing of it.

You know what the trouble is? Trouble is that probably all the good things in life take place in no more than a minute. I mean all added up, I betcha at the end of seventy years, should you live so long, you can sit down, you can figure the whole thing out: You spent nineteen years sleepin'. You spent five years goin' to the bathroom. You spent thirty-five years doin' some kinda work you absolutely HATED. Spent seven thousand eight hundred and fifty-three minutes blinkin' your eyes and added to that, you got that one minute of good things. Then one day you wonder whether you're minute's up.
