Pee Wee's Playhouse-- Adult Swim nightly on Cartoon Network! The King of Cartoons, Mrs Steve, Miss Yvonne, Chairy, Conky, Cap'n Carl, even Reba the Mail Lady! There was even a glmpse of the hunky Pool Boy Tuesday night!
My only question: This is a Kid's show, produced for children, which won numerous awards...Fifteen years after it was yanked (Pun intended) off the air, it needs a "Parental Advisory" label and a TV-PG rating to run at 10 PM. What the hell is worng here????

Oh that show was great - I haven't seen it in years! Yes - for children, but oh so much funnier for adults. Chairy and Cap'n were hysterical. Remeber the word of the day (or was it magic word? Can't remember)? Once it was "the," which made the episode a riot.

Posted: 7/13/06 at 11:40amforgot about the Pool Boy, but when the Cowboy shows up...somewhere on the WWW you can get videos of his nightclub act which preceded the TV show & movies and was even more suggestive. Or maybe those episodes were for public access wherever he started out...have seen sections of them, they're hilarious.

Rampant gay subtext throughout.
I recall an episode where Miss Yvonne is teaching Pee-Wee the Hula, and says, "We need some of those grass skirts that swish around", at which point Jambi's box popped open so he could say, "Swish? Did somebody say swish?"
Another time, Cowboy Curtis (Larry Fishburne) wished for some new boots. He sais he was a size 13, and Pee-Wee said, "You know what they say about a guy with big feet... big boots!"
And then there was when Pee-Wee was acting out Jack & the Beanstalk:
"Gee, Mr. Giant - what big feet you have... and what big knees you have... and what a big... AGHHHHHHHH!!!!"

I thought it was Miss Lauper, also, but a careful scrutiny of the credits reveals that if it's her, she's using a false name.
And I have no idea what you mean about gay subtext! It's as wholesome as Captain Kangaroo!
Personally, I liked the episode where PeeWee and Cowboy Curtis go on a "Practice date" so CC won't be nervous when he takes out Miss Yvonne and when he moves in for a goodnight kiss, Pee Wee pushes him away with "We've had such a lovely evening, let's not ruin it!"
The Nightclub Pee Wee was much more suggestive- the video was for an HBO special in about 1983 that lead to the TV show.

I believe it is indeed Cyndi using a false name.
Or so IMDB and several other sites would have you believe. ![]()

I recall that it was indeed Cyndi.
Pterry was my favorite. He was the gayest character on tv at the time...
I love the special that spawned the series, too. Edie McClurg:
"Hay, Miss Why-vonne!"

Posted: 7/13/06 at 2:53pmI remember that I detested Pee Wee Herman, in the early days, including appearances on talk shows and the HBO special. Then, he did PEE WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE, and that all changed. He really established a likeable character in that film, which he carried over to PEE WEE'S PLAYHOUSE.

Ah yes, Edie McClurg as the lesbian mail lady on the original HBO special.
And PeeWee and his buddy putting on shoe mirrors so they can look up Miss Yvonne's dress.

Pee Wee's Playhouse ruled. It was a really amazing, inventive and funny kid's show.

I remember my mom buying me a whole stack of Pee Wee tapes to watch. I really had a ball watching them and playing along.
Then, later, I found scripts from Pee Wee's Playhouse in my garage. My mom told me once I found them that my dad used to be a stage manager on the show.
Small world, huh?
