"And Alan Turing was a computer science pioneer, BTW, who ended up killing himself after being convicted of gross indecency for having a gay relationship."
It really is sad. Many of the early computer pioneers met tragic ends. It's rather interesting to learn. We spent a week learning about them in my Into to Digital Communication class. (Which was an amazing class. How often do you get one of the former presidents of the National Communication Association as a professor for an introductory class?)

I'm in a frenzy trying to figure out how I can get to New York for Sweeney Todd some time in April. I don't know where to stay, which airport is better to fly into, or how I'm going to afford any of it. At least I have Cincinatti in March to look forward to.

Aaaargh! I just found a one night stay and flight for $184, but I don't want to stay in a hostel. Damn damn damn damn damn.
That's a good deal. Though the hostel thing is not ideal....
I just bought tickets for Sweeney Todd in March.
Anyway, depending on where you are, SorryGrateful, it might be easier/less expensive to take a train or a bus.

Oh, I would love to take the train, but it's about 20 hours from Chicago to NYC. And I despise buses, not the least of which because I get veeeeerrrrrry motion sick in automobiles. But I'll look into both. Thanks, siren!
Depending on which hostel it is, it may be alright. I stayed in a Hostel up here on the Upper West Side that was not bad, it had private rooms, on bath per floor.
It was a little junky, but for a total of $184, I would snap it up.
Especially to see

I'm just not a person who likes to have people all up in my business, especially while I'm sleeping. For some reason, it would be more acceptable in Europe, but in New York, not so much. It's an unfair double standard, I know. Bad SG. Bad!
*spanks self*
I was JUST thinking that about feeling completely fine about hostelling it in Europe, but not so much in the major American cities. I'm not sure why this is... maybe it's just because staying in hostels is more popular on trips to Europe so there seems to be more of a market for it (and thus more options) there than in the U.S.? Or maybe it's just a perception thing where we feel fine roughing it in Europe but uncomfortable doing so in our own country.

I just saw Marine One fly by and I almost threw up a little!
brdlwyr, if I had your sensitivity, I'd be screwed. My parents' house is in the direct path between the White House and Camp David. 3 Black Hawks going over your house definitely ruins a backyard barbeque.
Why do you have to have a passport to stay in a hostel in NYC if you're an American citizen? It's just weird that they would have higher security standards considering you're paying like $30 a night, while nice hotels won't even bother as long as you have a credit card.
That is weird, they didn't ask for a passport anywhere I have stayed.
I have hosteled in St. Louis, Denver, Boston, and New York.
The room I had in New York was a private, it cost a little more, but not much.

Sorrygrateful, what sites are you looking at for flight/hotel? What's your budget and how long are you going for? I'd recommend checking out expedia.com, or Travelocity's last minute deals. If you're not going over Easter weekend, hotels shouldn't be too outrageous. I'm not a fan of hostelling either. (Oh, and I like LaGuardia much more than JFK Airport.)

Tiff, are you serious? I was just about to say, "anything but LaGuardia." Maybe it's only departures from that place that are truly godawful. Then again, JFK charges $3 for a luggage cart. Grr.
And maybe money is considered to be a security pass. :)

Tiff, first of all, gorgeous avatar.
I'm looking at expedia and cheaptickets mostly right now. They seem to have the cheapest deals for my one night stand. I was hoping to go some time during the first week of April in order to miss Easter and the weekend rush. I will go check out Travelocity right now. I've been trying to think of all the travel sites and had only thought of a couple. Thank you!
Really, Plum? I've done roundtrip from JFK and flown out of LGA. Every time I've gone to JFK I've had a headache and a half to deal with, but it's always been a dream flying out of LGA (not to mention much closer and cheaper to get to from midtown).
Thanks, Sorrygrateful. Have you looked at Hotwire for your hotel? Apparently you can get real steals for 4-star midtown places for well under a hundred bucks at the right time of year.
ETA: Is it just you or you and a companion? Do you really just want to fly in for one night or make it two? There's some reasonably good package deals on Expedia, and the airfare alone only costs US$140!

I'd love to make it two, but I'm barely going to be able to afford the one night as it is. Not that I'm complaining because Sondheim deserves it, but I doubt I could stay two. Thanks for the info in any case!
LaGuardia has been awful for me on flying out around Christmas, but most of the time it has been fine.
Each of them has their ups and downs, but they seem to even out so I usually go "cheapest."
