I'm going at midnight! I can't wait! Even though the reviews suck...I'm sure I'll love it for what it is. I love the book...anyone else excited?

Posted: 8/13/09 at 4:20pmSome of the reviews I read didn't like the aspects that are described in the book (Henry going into the past and meeting young Claire and her falling in love with him at that young age, etc). In other words, they thought it was creepy (which it kinda is). I take their reviews with a grain of salt. The reviews that I read, where they actually admit reading the book, were pretty positive.

Posted: 8/13/09 at 4:25pmI LOVE Rachel McAdams. I really don't get why she wasn't nominated for an Oscar for her performance in The Notebook.

I started reading the book a few days ago. Its actually my boss's book, so I can only read it if I'm at work. I like what I've read, but I'm still trying to wrap my head around how it happens.
I'll probably wait until it comes out on DVD to watch it.

Posted: 8/13/09 at 5:27pmI'm also just starting the novel. I'm a bit confused by it right now...I'm hoping the story and logistics will become clearer as the book progresses.

Posted: 8/13/09 at 6:04pmIt does. By the middle of it, you will be so engrossed in the story that the structure will seem natural. I have a hard time reading plays because I'll forget who someone is (especially if they leave and come back later in the play) and by the middle of The Time Traveler's Wife I had no problem with reading it. I've read it 3 times in all. Love it!

It took me a few tries to get into the book, but once you do it's great.
I'll probably wait for the dvd as well. I'm not much for movie theaters.....they are always FREEZING and some a-hole is always kicking the back of my seat.

Posted: 8/13/09 at 6:47pmLoved the book .... it will be interesting to see how they handle the logistics. I imagine it would be easier to keep up with the time references (if the scripts is any good) than it was in the book - though, as others have said, you very quickly become comfortable with the unique story and structure.

Posted: 8/13/09 at 7:09pmI'm with spider...I was totally confused by the book throughout the first 50 pages or so when I first read it. But I've read it four times since then and I love it more and more every time. It's fantastic.

Posted: 8/13/09 at 7:20pmYeah, once the book reaches a certain point, it becomes much easier to follow.

Posted: 8/13/09 at 7:24pmI could totally see this movie being the sleeper hit of the summer a la "The Notebook." It looks very promising...the reviews I read don't seem to rip the movie to shreds they just seem to be mostly confused by it. I didn't really read a totally negative review, just generally mixed.

Ok, I just got back.
And I enjoyed it very much. They did a nice job of condensing the novel into a concise, 105 minute film but I actually found the romance between Henry and Clare to be a bit hindered by the omissions of the seemingly trivial details of their relationship in the book if that makes any sense.
Charisse and Gomez's characters, particularly, are significantly less involved than they were in the book. But Ron Livingston provides genuine, wry comic relief.
Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana are really great. They have really strong chemistry and they really carry the film very well.
Despite all of the problems the film has (and there are a lot, mainly in the screenplay) I liked it very much. The book is markably better but the movie really moved me, more than I expected. The last half hour or so is really touching. This has the potential to be the new "Notebook," as I said before. It's actually better than "The Notebook," less contrived, sappy, and syrupy.
I hope people give it a chance because everyone I was with really liked it, most of which hadn't read the novel. Go see it...it's not a masterpiece, obviously, but it's very enjoyable.

I have read two reviews that make reference to a "Happy ending" that was not true to the novel. That might be OK tho because reading the book makes me cry for DAYS and I DO NOT want to sob like that in public.
I haven't seen it yet.

**MAJOR SPOILER**
Joe - I think the book as both a sad and happy ending. The sad part, of course, is when Henry dies. But, the happy ending is that Claire gets to see him one last time before she dies as an old lady by him leaping forward in time when he was younger.
**END OF MAJOR SPOILER**
OMG, I am so excited to see this movie in 4 hours, I am giddy. lol

Posted: 8/14/09 at 4:35pmI love the book and I was disappointed. The love didn't seem real as usual. But Rachel McAdams was a goddess as usual, I LOVE HER. I was crying so much the last 15 minutes.

Posted: 8/14/09 at 4:36pmSee to me that "Happy" part is what makes me bawl... Everyone dies but that one last glimpse so long long after- that destroys me!

Posted: 8/14/09 at 5:00pmThe end made me cry because I wasn't expecting it to be different from the book but it worked. It worked much better than the ending of the book would have on the screen, in my opinion. The end of the book worked exceptionally well on the page but on screen the ending that was chosen works very well. Its touching and poignant and very moving.

Just got back. Out of a rating of 10, I give it an 8.5. The editing at the beginning was not good but it got a lot better towards the half hour mark. Rachel McAdams WAS Claire. Everything about her was perfect for the role. I don't really like how they handled Henry though. He never seemed older. Yes, they put a little gray in his hair, but that's it. Also, I think they paid more attention to the effects of him not being there than their actual love.
Now, THAT being said....I honestly don't think they could have made a better movie out of this book. There is SO much going on with many different perspectives that if they followed the book religiously, it would have been a mess on screen. They hit all of the major points, which I was very grateful for. The ending, while different, still packed a punch (although I wish they would have kept the book ending because it broke my heart). The cinematography was gorgeous and the CGI effects of Henry disappearing was seamless.
Overall, I was pleasantly surprised at how it turned out. The book, of course, is 20 BILLION times better but the movie is a great adaption, nonetheless.
