When I see the mad hordes running into stores @ 6 AM & trampling over anyone in their way, it just warms the cockles of my heart.
Who says Christmas is too commercialized?

I LOVE commercialized Christmas!

The true meaning of Christmas is that Raku is giving 50% off your bill if you mention Corine's Corner.
If you mention Avenue Q you will receive a free glass of Plum Wine.
If you mention Forbidden Broadway you will receive a free Dessert Sushi.
Happy Holidays from Corine's Corner!

What I am saying, Mr. Roxy, is that the 'true' meaning of Christmas is alive and well at Raku on 47th Street.
Raku is now open through next Saturday.
Stop by and say 'Seasons Greetings' to Ray and the Entire Staff of Corine's Corner

I was meeting someone for lunch near one of the Kohl's Dep't stores and the parking lot was so crowded I couldn't find a spot. I was told the line for customer service literally went across the store. The cash registers were just as bad.

Christmas only has the meaning you give it, Mr. R. Outside of that it's as meaningless a day as any other. If you think christmas is a solemn or joyous spiritual day. Let it be so in your life. If you think it's just another meaningless excuse to get together with friends, go for it.
The bottom line is not to let what other people do define the day for you. And conversely, resist the urge to define what it may be to other people.
While I don't stampede through malls, elbowing old women into the clearance bins, I am Mr. Bigass Commercial Christmas. I decorate the house, inside and out. I bake 40 kinds of cookies, each one a work of art. I make little penguin appetizers out of black olives, cream cheese and bits of carrot. I host several parties and attend even more. (and I won't even tell you when I start planning it all.) I light candles, put on carols and sip cocoa in my flannels in front of the fire. I don't think about jesus even once through the entire time. And that's the way I like it.
That's the true meaning of christmas, Mr. R.

Very nicely put.
It may interest all of you to know that Christmas has always been a mix of the secular and the holy. ALWAYS. And actually, the religious aspects of it got into the act rather late in the scheme of things. When they finally decided it was fitting to acknowledge the (rather "common") birth of the Savior. The Church didn't find it worthy. Up until then, Easter (the Resurrection) was the big holy day. Christmas was primarily pagan. They ultimately decided, "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em," and the religious holiday we've come to know began.
And it may also interest you to know that the secular celebration of Christmas got so out of hand (think a crazy Mardi Gras bash) that Christmas was BANNED in England and the colonies for almost 200 years, starting in the 1400s.

Mateo, is your tree painted pink?
Also, in an addendum to b12b's post: One of the biggest Christmas traditions of both religious and secular celebrations, the Christmas tree, got its start in the pagan observances of the winter solstice.

Isn't There Anyone Who Knows What Christmas is All About?
The best explanation I ever heard was the one Linus gave to Charlie Brown...
And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
And the angel said unto them,
Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

Posted: 11/24/07 at 1:04amNothing means Christmas to me more than snuggling up on a couch with my family, drinking hot chocolate (occasionally spiked with peppermint schnapps), and watching A Charlie Brown Christmas.

Scott, a wonderful tradition. Keep it up.
Jane..a year never goes by without A Charlie Brown Christmas..plus my better half loves it so there is no choice. OK I love it too.
#22re: The True Meaning Of Christmas
Posted: 11/24/07 at 1:12amI could NEVER replace Charlie Brown with anything... but I'm definitely a fan of Emmett Otter etc. as well. Those two, the (animated) Grinch, and Rudolph are the only Christmas specials I have to make sure to watch every year.
