I think there was beer in the post-apocalyptic society. I believe Gary ordered the water out of choice to show us that he had chosen sobriety.

Plus the scene alluded back to an earlier conversation he had with Andy who told him that it took balls to walk into a bar after a rugby match with a bunch of tough guys and order water. That was a true test of bravery. Now Gary had the chance to walk into a tough biker bar and show off the new found strength he had in sobriety.

I hadn't thought of the 12 bars as the twelve steps, but I think it's a good observation!

But at the same time, Gary walked into the bar with his "younger" friends, showing that he hadn't grown up and wanted to stay "young and foolish" forever.

That's true, but I felt like he wanted a "redo" with the younger friends. This time he could play younger and wiser instead of younger and foolish. He could re-live the glory days with the advantage of hindsight, and pick a different path in the choose your own adventure of life.

Taken from Buzzfeed and very spoilery

The World's End

• The first pub they go to is The First Post.
• The Old Familiar looks identical to The First Post.
• They meet the town’s famous crazy old man Basil in The Famous Cock.
• They fight the robot teenagers in The Cross Hands.
• They all don't want to continue, except for Gary (one comedy face with four drama faces)
• They see local drug dealer Reverend Green in The Trusted Servant.
• They fight the robot twins in The Two-Headed Dog.
• They gang is tempted by robot women at The Mermaid (look at the mermaids' hair).
• They fight a swarm of blue bloods in The Bee Hive
• Gary King slams his head against the wall at The King’s Head.
• A car is driven through the wall in The Hole In The Wall.
• And the world ends at The World’s End.

I did love all the names and signs for the pubs and the movie definitely made me want to go on my own pub crawl.

Here's a link to pubcrawls.com, but I think it would be more fun to plan on my own with friends:

I know i'm being literalist but...

how did the blanks survive the fireball ?

and why did all the pre 1990 tech also disappear?

Otherwise really enjoyed it.

I've seen the movie last weekend and man it is a halarious film to watch. This movie to me is just as good as Shaun of the Dead, which the send ups they do are really like a love letter to the genre.

That ending was unexpected for me.
