The fires in California...

The Santa Anas stopped mid-evening, and the wind shifted to coming from the south-west - so now we're innundated with smoke and ash re: The fires in California... I can deal with that, however unpleasant - but the second I start to see embers flying, all bets are off!

Our friends are tucked in at other friends' houses, and just waiting to see what the night brings. Mostly, it will depend on the winds. There is NO humidity here right now - down to around 5%! And we had the hottest day on record in 70+ years. None of which is helping the situation.

DG, I am nowhere near the fires, yet I found my Sunday paper covered in ash.

Let's hope today is better than yesterday.

At the moment, there is NO wind movement at all - so hopefully, that will give them a chance to get some serious work done. The one out our way is only 5% contained, and has moved many miles in the last 36 hours re: The fires in California...

One good thing - because it moved further north and west, our friends were told this morning they could return home. But, so MANY homes have been lost between the two fires re: The fires in California...

It's supposed to be even hotter today than yesterday, and the humidity continues to basically be non-existent. I hope people take the recommendations to heart, and only go out if necessary. They NEED to have the roads as clear as possible for either emergency channels or to get people out of the way.

Let's hope the winds stay quiet so the spread of fire can be contained...

The pictures have been just heartbreaking.

501 of the 600 trailers in the one park went up in minutes.

That's just one park...

And they were mostly elderly owners - it just breaks my heart. That's not something to have to deal with at their stage of life.

I heard from my friend Kelly, and she and her husband are okay in Yorba Linda. They decided to stay after being told to evacuate -- good thing, they were able to hose down the house several times -- embers two inches big where landing in their yard.

I haven't been following this from the beginning but does anyone know what started this? It may be an impossible task but there has got to be enough observation stations to nip these fires in the bud. I've been a Californian all my life and these past few years have been the worst for fires. More has to be done for creating an early warning system.

Anyway, my prayers are with all my fellow Californians to the south and lets hope that the winds die down and stay down.

I may not know a lot about theater but I know that I love it.

Son,

I'm glad they were able to save their house, but when you are told to evacuate, you should.

What would have happened if the water was shut off? They would have been stuck. It is amazing that they didn't lose water pressure.

It was a brave but very foolish thing to do. Things can be replaced, people can't.

Diva, they had both cars packed and ready to go. Evacuation was never mandatory just precautionary. The whole block stayed. If they hadn't had water pressure they would have left.
